Anchorage, Alaska --- Minnesota State used a pair of second period goals to come away with a 3-2 road Western Collegiate Hockey Association road win at Alaska Anchorage Friday.
UAA took the game’s first lead with less then a second remaining in the first period after Justin Kirchhevel deflected Tommy Grant’s shot from the point past MSU sophomore Phil Cook with UAA on the power play.
The Mavericks scored twice in the second period to take control of the game. Senior forward Andrew Sackrison scored for the second time in 2010-11 when he poked a rebound past UAA netminder Rob Gunderson at the 5:34 mark. MSU took its first lead after junior forward Mike Louwerse got his second tally of the year after he made a nice move to go around a Seawolves defenseman and beat Gunderson at 17: 56.
Sophomore forward Eli Zuck’s power play marker, in which the Anchorage native deflected Kurt Davis’ shot past Gunderson at 2:17 of the third frame, made in 3-1 in MSU’s favor and proved to be the eventual game-winning tally – his first career game-winning goal. MSU was able to stave off a five-on-three situation late in the game, but the Seawolves did make it a one-goal game when they scored with an extra attacker on with the goaltender pulled on Kirchhevel’s second goal coming on a deflection at 19:38.
Cook was credited with 29 saves in the contest as the Mavericks claimed their first road win of the year.
The Mavericks, now 2-2-3 21-2-1 WCHA) on the year, square-off vs. UAA again Saturday with a 7:07 p.m. (AST) face-off scheduled at Sullivan Arena.
