Houghton, Mich. --- A pair of successful power play chances at the end of the second period allowed host Michigan Tech to gain a 5-2 home Western Collegiate Hockey Association win over Minnesota State Friday in Houghton.
Michigan Tech jumped out to a 2-0 first-period lead on goals that came just after MSU had killed off penalties. The first one, which came at 10:37 after Maverick sophomore netminder
Phil Cook made a nice save, was scored on a rebound by freshman
Dennis Rix. Then
Eric Kattelus made a diving play to his left to collect the puck before pushing is past Cook at 14:15. MSU responded three minutes later on a two-on-one play that saw senior forward
Rylan Galiardi feed a nice backhand saucer pass to
J.P. Burkemper that the freshman forward put past MTU’s
Kevin Genoe for his first career goal as a collegian at 17:24.
MSU junior Michael Dorr took a shot from the slot that beat Genoe at 1:42 of the second period to tie the score, but a pair of MTU power play markers near the end of the period made it 4-2 in favor of the Huskies. The Mavericks had two men in the box when Steven Seigo scored on a slap shot from the top of the slot at 18:40 and then, with the Huskies still on the power play, Brett Olson went top shelf on the glove side to beat Cook at 19:41. MSU owned a 16-9 advantage in shots on goal in the period.
MSU, which was zero-for-six in power play chances in the game, owned a 37-27 advantage in shots on goal.<
The Mavericks, now 0-1-2 (0-1-0 WCHA) on the year, square-off vs. the Huskies (3-0-1 overall, 1-0-0 WCHA) again Saturday with a 7:07 p.m. (EST) face-off scheduled.
