Houghton, Mich. --- Minnesota State fell to Michigan Tech, 4-1, in Western Collegiate Hockey Association action Friday in Houghton.
Following a scoreless first period in which the Mavericks outshot the Huskies 10-8, Tech struck for a trio of even-strength tallies to take a 3-0 second-period lead. Drew Dobson converted on a nice pass from Jordan Baker to tap a shot past MSU sophomore Austin Lee on the glove side at 1:26. Then, at 7:13, Brett Olson scored on a rebound at 7:13 and when Malcolm Gwilliam scored on a scramble from in front of MSU’s net at 17:30, the Huskies took a 3-0 lead into the locker room after two periods of play.
The Mavericks played the Huskies even-up in the third period with Tech’s Gwilliam scoring his second goal on a rebound play at 15:05 and then MSU’s Rylan Galiardi finally solving Huskie freshman Kevin Genoe at the 15:35 mark when he stole the puck from a Tech player and then beat Genoe with a wrist shot high on the glove side for a shorthanded goal.
The Mavericks, who owned a 31-28 advantage in shots on goal on the night, fall to 11-14-2 overall, 5-13-1 WCHA. Michigan Tech, which had not won a game since Nov. 13, upped its record to 4-20-1 with the win and is 3-16-0 in league action.
The two teams are scheduled to play again Saturday at MTU’s MacInnes Student Ice Arena with a 5:07 p.m. (EST) face-off scheduled.
