Minnesota State to Play in Easton Holiday Showcase January 2 and 3

Mankato, Minn.--- The Mavericks, now 4-8-4 on the year and 2-8-4-2 in WCHA  play, participate in the Easton Holiday Showcase in St. Cloud, Minnesota, January 2 and 3, where they will play non-conference opponents #1 Mercyhurst on Saturday and Providence on Sunday.

About Mercyhurst: The first ranked Lakers of Mercyhurst are 15-1-1 and 4-0-1 in the College Hockey America Conference. In their last action, the Lakers traveled to Canton, New York to take on St. Lawrence College. Mercyhurst earned the sweep by defeating the Saints in both contests in the series. The Lakers defeated the Saints on Friday night by a score of 4-2. Mercyhurst completed the sweep with a 6-2 win on Saturday. The Mercyhurst College Lakers are led by junior forward Vicki Bendus  (11-19--30), junior forward Jesse Scanzano (12-17--29) and sophomore forward Bailey Bram (15-13--28). In net for the Lakers will likely be sophomore Hillary Pattenden who owns a 15-1-1 record, holds a 1.46 goals against average and a .932 save percentage.

MSU/MC History:
The Mavericks are 1-8-0 all-time against the Lakers. Minnesota State’s only victory came in a non-conference game in the 2005-06 season when they beat the Lakers, 2-0. The contest was played in Erie, Pa.

About Providence: The Friars are 5-7-7 and 4-3-4 in the Hockey East Conference. In its last action, Providence traveled to Chestnut Hill, Mass. to take on Boston College. The contest ended in a 2-2 tie with Boston College winning in the shootout. The Friars are led by sophomore forward Ashley Cottrell (10-11--21), freshman forward Nicole  Anderson (9 -2--11), junior forward Alyse Ruff (4-6--10), junior forward Jean O’Neill (3-7--10) and sophomore defenseman Laura Veharanta (3-7--10). The Friars leading goaltender is sophomore Genevieve Lacasse. Lacasse currently sports a 5-7-7 record, a .921 save percentage and a 2.17 goals against average.

MSU/PC History: The Mavericks are 2-2-1 all-time against the Friars. MSU’s two victories came in a non-conference series sweep in the 2003-04 season.

Wisconsin Series Notes: The Mavericks continued the 2009-10 conference portion of their schedule by playing host to Wisconsin this past weekend...Friday’s game had a 7:07 pm start time, while Saturday’s game had a 3:07 pm start time...The Mavericks entered the weekend with a 4-6-4 overall and 2-6-4 in the WCHA...Friday’s contest ended in a 3-0 Wisconsin victory...The Badgers scored one goal in the first period and two in the second period...The Badgers Brooke Ammerman scored Wisconsin’s first two goals and Jasmine Giles scored the third...Maverick sophomore Emmi Leinonen finished Friday’s game with a team-best seven shots...The Mavericks and Badgers finished the contest even on penalties and penalty minutes, five for 10 minutes...Altmann finished with 29 saves, allowing only three goals...Her save percentage was .906...The Maverick finished the game with 26 shots on goal compared to Wisconsin’s 32...MSU finished 0-4 on power play attempts, the Badgers ended the night 1-5 with the extra skater...MSU won in the face-off circle, 40-31...In Saturday afternoon’s contest, the Badgers jumped out to a 4-0 before the Mavericks got on the board...Christina Lee (Maple Plain, Minn.) put Minnesota State on the board at 12:28 in the second period as she beat Badger goaltender Alannah McCready...Amy Udvig (New Brighton, Minn.) assisted on Lee’s second period goal and was MSU’s first of the series and her third goal of the season...Wisconsin then tallied back-to-back power play goals making the score 6-1...Kala Buganski (Andover, Minn.) capped off the scoring at 12:26 in the third...Holly Snyder (Kenosha, Wis,) and Lauren Smith (Burnsville, Minn.) assisted Buganski on the Maverick power play goal...Altmann finished the contest with a team-best 15 saves...The Mavericks finished the game with 22 shots compared to the Badgers 23...Wisconsin finished the evening 3-6 on the power play chances, while Minnesota State went 1-7 with the extra skater...The two teams split in the face-off circle, 23-23...Five Mavericks finished the weekend with one point each...As a team, MSU finished 1-11 on power play chances, while Wisconsin finished 4-11 with an extra skater...The Mavericks gave up five of their nine goals in the second period...Senior forward Ashley Young currently leads the team in points with 5-8--13...Leinonen and Smith currently sit second on the team in scoring with 7-5--12 and 3-9--12, respectively...The team currently sits 10-76 on power play chances and 20-102 on penalty kills.
