Bemidji, Minn. --- Minnesota State earned a 3-2 win at #4 Bemidji State Saturday in claiming a nonconference contest played at the John Glas Fieldhouse.
Combined with last night's 5-1 win, the Mavericks have now won six consecutive games over the Beavers.
The teams traded goals in the first period with the Beavers striking first 54 seconds in on a Matt Read wrist shot from 25-feet out that beat MSU sophomore goaltender Austin Lee on the short side. The Mavericks responded at 4:29 on a play in which BSU goaltender Mathieu Dugas failed to handle a dump in by freshman forward Eriah Hayes with the puck bouncing off of Dugas’ glove over his shoulder into the net.
The lone goal of the middle frame was scored at the 45-second mark with the Mavericks on the power play. Senior forward Geoff Irwin made a nice move to the net and after he was rebuffed by Dugas, Kael Mouillierat pushed the puck into the net for his fifth goal of the year.
Sophomore forward Michael Dorr, playing in his first game as a Maverick, got his first career goal at 7:34 of the third after taking Ben Youds’ chip off the glass in the neutral zone and going in to beat Dugas with a wrist shot. Dorr also drew an assist on Mouillierat’s goal for a two-point night and Youds extended his scoring streak to four games with the assist and increased his assist total on the year to a team-best 16.
The Beavers got one back at 17:57 with Dugas on the bench for an extra attacker with Jordan George scoring on a scramble in front of the net to round out the scoring.
BSU outshot the Mavericks by a 31-14 margin with MSU’s Lee now owning a 7-5-0 record for the year.
Kael Mouillierat, who also assisted on the goal by Eriah Hayes, now had five goals and four assists for nine points on the year.
Now 9-8-1 overall for 2009-10, the Mavericks have won five of their last six games. MSU continues nonconference action next Friday and Saturday with a home-and-home series with Nebraska-Omaha. The two teams square off in Mankato Friday and in Omaha Saturday.
