Maverick Tankers Drop Lidlifter to UW-Eau Claire

Eau Claire, Wis. —  The Minnesota State women's swimming and diving team opened the 2009-10 campaign with a 124-117 loss to the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, Friday evening.

The Mavericks finished with five first-place finishes in the dual and recorded 24 top-five finishes.

In the relays, MSU won the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:54.79.  That relay squad consisted of junior Angela Krych, freshman Alyssa Kuffel, junior Sophie Kaeter and sophomore Stefanie Edwards.  MSU also finished second and fourth in the 200-yard freestyle relay.  The second-place team, which finished in 1:44.34 consisted of freshman Mary Bastan, Edwards, junior Kristin Hayes and sophomore Kaitlin Ogden.  The fourth-place team, which touched in a time of 1:47.78 was composed of freshman Kelsea Smith, junior Heather Schulz, freshman Marissa Reeve and junior BrieAnna Simon.

Individually, Reeve won the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 11:05.02, while Krych won the 100-yard freestyle with a time of :54.09.  Schulz won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:10.98, while sophomore Beth Keskey won the three-meter dive with a score of 195.75.  

Also earning top-five finishes were: Senior Rachel Busch (second, 1,000-yard freestyle, 11:17.08), freshman Tabeth Temperley (third, 200-yard freestyle, 2:03.47; fifth, 100-yard butterfly, 1:04.82), junior Kim Christensen (second, 50-yard freestyle, :25.00), Ogden (fourth, 50-yard freestyle, :25.80),  Krych (third, 200-yard, individual medley, 2:19.56), Schulz (fifth, 200-yard individual medley, 2:22.99), sophomore Emily Timm (second, 100-yard butterfly, 1:01.67, fifth, 100-yard backstroke, 1:05.71), Reeve (second, 500-yard freestyle, 5:24.65), Edwards (fifth, 100-yard freestyle, :58.05), Hayes (third, 500-yard freestyle, 5:32.70), Kuffel (second, 100-yard breaststroke, 1:12.53), junior Claire Bergman (third, 100-yard breaststroke, 1:12.93), freshman Amber McHugh (fifth, 100-yard breaststroke, 1:13.07), junior Janel Duffy (second, three-meter dive, 195.35) and Cristen Norman (fourth, three-meter dive, 143.40).

Minnesota State (0-1) opens the home portion of its schedule Friday, Nov. 6 with a home duel against Gustavus at 5 p.m.
