WAYNE, Neb. --- The Minnesota State men's and women's track and field teams concluded their first outdoor weekend of the season at the Wildcat Outdoor Classic Saturday.
"I was really happy with how well the throwers did down at Wayne starting out the outdoor season," head coach
Mike Turgeon said. "We're excited for them to throw at home next weekend on Friday. Looking forward to getting the team altogether and competing all of our Mavericks."
Men
Peyton Byrne led the Mavericks in the hammer throw as he recorded a personal best throw if 49.78m (163-4) to finish in 11th place. Byrne also led the Mavericks in the discus as he finished ninth with a throw of 43.23m (141-10).
Justin Fretag took 16th place in the discuss with a throw of 41.57m (136-4) as well.
Byrne took fourth place in the shot put event as he notched a personal best throw of 15.35m (50-4.5).
Evan Laughridge followed in sixth place with a throw of 14.93m (48-11.75).
Women
Lauren Bird took eighth place in the hammer throw with a throw of 48.52m (159-2).
Lane King and
Jocelyn Hart each notched personal bests in the hammer throw as well with throws of 44.83m (147-1) and 41.28m (135-5), respectively.
Hart led the Mavericks in the discus event as she recorded a personal best throw of 41.82m (137-2).
In the javelin event,
Katelin Flack led the Mavericks in ninth place with a throw of 31.35m (102-10). King recorded a throw of 30.47m (99-11) to finish in 11th place also.
King led the way for the Mavericks in the shot put event as she posted a throw of 11.40m (37-5) to finish in 11th place. Emma Oiser followed in 12th place with a throw of 11.39m (37-4.5) also, while Hart took 14th place with a throw of 11.29m (47-0.5).
The men's and women's track and field teams will return to action next week at a pair of events. MSU will host the Stomper Open on Friday, April 3 at the Mark Schuck Outdoor Track and Field Complex. The Mavericks will also compete in the two-day USD Early Bird in Vermillion S.D. on April 3-4.
