Mavericks Close Regular Season with Road Setback

SAINT PAUL, Minn. — The Minnesota State Mavericks (27-1, 21-1 NSIC) dropped a 96-75 contest to Concordia-St. Paul (21-6, 17-5 NSIC) at the Gangelhoff Center on Saturday, Feb. 21.

Sophomore Rhyan Holmgren led No. 1-ranked MSU with 16 points, six free throws, and two steals, while Natalie Bremer added 15 points, eight rebounds, and three assists. Mackenzie Schweim finished with 11 points and a perfect mark from the free-throw line, and Hannah Herzig contributed 10 points, five rebounds, and a block.

The Mavericks started strong, converting early turnovers into offense and generating 14 points in the paint behind the efforts of Ava Stier and Mallory Czinano. MSU held pace early but trailed 24-20 at the end of the first quarter as the Golden Bears found their rhythm from the perimeter.

Minnesota State responded in the second quarter with steady interior scoring and disciplined free-throw shooting, trimming the deficit throughout the period. Holmgren's free throws helped close the gap, and a buzzer-beating tip-in from Herzig sent the Mavericks into halftime trailing just 42-41.

Concordia-St. Paul seized control in the third quarter, using efficient shooting and balanced scoring inside and beyond the arc to extend its lead to 65-53 entering the fourth. MSU made a push in the final frame, cutting the deficit to seven midway through the quarter following a three-point play by Bremer, but the Golden Bears answered with timely free throws and strong execution in the paint to secure the 96-75 win.

MSU now shifts its focus to the NSIC Tournament, where the Mavericks have earned a first-round bye and will play their opening game at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 28, at the Pentagon in Sioux Falls, S.D., against an opponent to be determined.
