Pentagon Victory Sends #3 Mavericks to NSIC Semifinals

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — The Minnesota State women's basketball team (28-1, 21-1 NSIC) secured a 94-87 victory over St. Cloud State (14-15, 10-12 NSIC) in the NSIC Tournament quarterfinals at the Sanford Pentagon on Saturday, Feb. 28  fueled by a disruptive defensive effort that produced 18 steals and shifted momentum in the No. 3-ranked Mavericks' favor.

MSU came out strong in the first quarter, using tight defensive pressure to force eight turnovers and snag six steals. Hannah Herzig was instrumental, setting up several scoring plays, including a fast-break layup just 1:27 into the game. The team showed sharp ball movement, dishing out five assists and shooting 11-for-18 from the floor. 

Senior guard Adeline Kent nailed a 3-pointer at 3:46, and Natalie Bremer's late-quarter surge, highlighted by a 3-pointer and two free throws, widened their lead. While the Huskies kept pace initially with some solid bench scoring, the Mavericks ended the quarter up 26-18.

Heading into the second quarter, MSU's defense stayed tight, racking up three blocks and five steals. Kent got things rolling with a jumper and a layup to keep a narrow lead. The Huskies fought back with five 3-pointers, keeping it close. 

As the quarter went on, the Mavericks found success on fast breaks, with Rhyan Holmgren and Natalie Mueller each adding key layups to regain the lead. Despite the back-and-forth, the Mavericks matched the Huskies score-for-score, ending the half all tied up at 47-47, setting up a tense second half.

The third quarter saw the Mavericks kick off with a defensive push, highlighted by Herzig's steal leading to Mackenzie Schweim's fast-break layup, giving them a brief lead. Schweim had a standout game, hitting a career-high 19 points. Yet, the Huskies countered with a string of successful shots, including a 3-pointer from Jada Eggebrecht, to reclaim control. 

Midway through, the Mavericks fought back with Kent's layup and Bremer's 3-pointer, closing the gap. However, the Huskies capitalized on turnovers and extended their lead with fast-break points. In the final minutes, Minnesota State rallied, with Ava Stier hitting key free throws and a late steal leading to a layup, pulling within one. The Mavericks trailed 66-65 as the quarter closed.

In the fourth quarter, it was a tight battle as both teams exchanged buckets. Bremer tied it at 67 with an early jumper and then converted two free throws to nudge the Mavericks ahead. Midway through, Kent's 3-pointer lifted MSU to an 80-78 advantage. Kent matched her career-high with 15 points, going perfect from the field with two 3-pointers and adding four assists. 

The Mavericks showed grit on defense and smarts on offense, with Bremer adding crucial points, including a fast-break layup and a key jumper to stretch the lead to 86-82. In the closing moments, Minnesota State sealed the deal with clutch free throws, with Herzig and Bremer making the most of their opportunities at the line. Outscoring the Huskies 29-21 in the final quarter, the Mavericks wrapped it up with a 94-87 victory.

Bremer led MSU with 30 points, hitting all eight free throws and sinking four 3-pointers. Kent was perfect from the field, scoring 15 points with two 3-pointers and adding four assists. Schweim added 19 points and grabbed four rebounds. NSIC Defensive Player of the Year, Herzig was a defensive standout with five steals and also notched five assists.
