MANKATO, Minn. - Minnesota State welcomed seven schools to Mankato for the single-day Ted Nelson Classic on Saturday in indoor track & field at Myers Field House. Maverick student-athletes broke several meet records in the process. Next on the calendar is the Maverick Open on Friday, February 20, which will serve as the final tune-up prior to the NSIC Indoor Championships on Feb. 27-28 (Myers Field House).
Minnesota State women's track and field is ranked No. 4 in NCAA Division II.
"It was great having our team back together at home for the Ted Nelson Classic, named after former world-record holder Ted Nelson, a true pioneer of our program," said head coach
Mike Turgeon. "We are starting our tapering process as we head into the championship portion of our season, and we are already seeing some performances start to break through. We are also looking forward to next Friday, when we will celebrate our 42 seniors with a special awards recognition."
Three distance runners eclipsed the meet record in 5000 meters, including MSU's
Madison Matzek in third place with a time of 17:41.96.
Tara Hertling finished third in one mile with a personal best time of 5:15.62. The Mavericks held down positions 3-5 in 400 meters.
Grace Hambel came in third with a time of 58.28, followed by
Brianna Shroyer (58.29) and
Lexi Kuffel (58.96).
Amalinally Pemberton won the 600 meter event with a time of 1:37.26. The Mavericks also dominated in 60 meter hurdle finals.
Esaba Okwaramoi led the field with a meet record and personal best time of 8.40.
Jordin McGee was second in 8.60 and
Alexa Wornson crossed fourth in 9.05.
Norah D'Almeida topped the podium in 60 meter dash finals with a time of 7.66.
Tiffany Kolb was third (7.74) and
Madison Hubbard was fourth (7.75) for MSU. D'Almeida also took first in 200 meters with a time of 25.11. Teammate
Chantle Reiland was second in the same event with a personal best time of 25.32.
Ashley Overgaauw placed first in 1000 meters with a time of 2:57.21.
Addison Peed also grabbed third with a season best time of 3:03.63.
Lillian Washington led the field in triple jump when she landed at 11.98m (39-3.75).
Willow Oehmichen won in pole vault with a personal best mark of 3.79m (12-5.25).
Elvira Collvin was second at a height of 3.64m (11-11.25).
Alexa Post also tied for third in high jump with a mark of 1.53m (5-00.25).
In weight throw,
Aubri Brown set a meet record with a mark of 20.43m (67-00.50). Teammate
Lauren Bird was second with a mark of 17.29m (56-8.75). Brown also won in shot put with a toss at 13.06m (42-10.25).
Jadyn Hart was third (12.74m, 41-9.75).
Bianca Bertolotti placed fourth in long jump at a distance of 5.48m (17-11.75).
