#1 Mavericks Hold Off Wildcats

WAYNE, Neb. — No. 1 Minnesota State (26-0, 20-0 NSIC) extended its winning streak with a 77-71 victory over Wayne State (10-16, 5-15 NSIC) at Rice Auditorium, fueled by a 27 steals from the Mavericks' defense on Saturday, Feb. 14.

Pacing the Mavericks, Natalie Bremer led all scorers with 23 points while adding seven made field goals and a game-high seven steals. Senior Ava Stier followed with 14 points and five steals, impacting the game on both ends of the floor. Freshman Haylee Stokes added 11 points, knocking down both of her three-point attempts and collecting three steals, while Hannah Herzig finished with nine points, four rebounds, and two steals.

The Mavericks started strong, turning Wayne State's turnovers into early momentum. After a slow start, they surged ahead with a 9-2 run, highlighted by Mackenzie Schweim's clutch three-pointer at 3:06. They excelled in transition, racking up eight fast-break points and forcing 13 turnovers. At the end of the first, MSU held a 20-14 lead, setting the tone with their fast-paced, defensive strategy.

Minnesota State kept the pressure in the second quarter. The three-pointer from sophomore Rhyan Holmgren and Bremer's layup extended the lead. The Mavericks' defense was relentless, forcing errors and seizing opportunities. Stier was pivotal, scoring a layup and converting the free throw to stretch the lead. Even though Wayne State kept pace in scoring, MSU held a steady six-point advantage by halftime, leading 44-38.

In the third, the Mavericks continued to capitalize on turnovers. Adeline Kent's layup and Stier's tip-in pushed the lead further. Their defensive tenacity forced 14 turnovers, providing Bremer with chances to shine from the free-throw line. Despite Wayne State's attempts in the paint, MSU ended the third up 64-54, anchored by their solid defense and clutch free-throw shooting.

The fourth quarter saw MSU maintain their edge. Stokes and Bremer led a fast break for a jumper, and Stokes nailed a three-pointer off Bremer's assist. WSC fought back, narrowing the gap, but Bremer's crucial jumper, assisted by Kent, sealed the deal. The Mavericks wrapped up the game with a 77–71 victory.

Minnesota State returns to the Taylor Center in Mankato, Minn., to host Winona State on Thursday, Feb. 19, with tip-off set for 5:30 p.m. in their final regular-season home game of the year.
