Women’s Track & Field Hosts Maverick Open #2

MANKATO, Minn. – Hosting the second one-day meet this week, Minnesota State women's track and field competed well at the Maverick Open #2 Friday at the Mark Schuck Outdoor Track and Field Complex in cool, breezy conditions. The team scored 169 points for second place, behind only Division I St. Thomas (245.5).

"Our team battled through tough weather conditions and competed hard," said head coach Mike Turgeon. "We're looking forward to the NSIC Championships in Duluth as we work to defend our outdoor titles from last season."
 
Grace Hambel helped the Mavericks in first place in 400 meters with a season best time of 58.02. Noemie Thibaud also crossed the line first in 100 meter hurdle finals with a time of 14.04.
 
Setting a meet record in 800 meters was Isabela Shepard (2:15.76) for first place. Paige Larsen also eclipsed the meet record with her third place time of 2:19.77, a personal best.
 
Norah D'Almeida was third behind a pair of St. Thomas athletes, but ahead of the 200 meter meet record with a time of 24.27.
 
Elise Jensen led MSU discus throwers in first place (48.23m, 158-03) and set a personal best (18th in Division II).
 
Lillian Washington and Olivia Solis finished 1-2 in high jump. Washington's mark of 1.68m (5-6.00) was a season best (39th in Division II) and Solis posted a mark of 1.63m (5-4.25).
 
Pole vault was moved indoors and seven athletes surpassed the meet record. Elvira Collvin came in first place, with a height of 3.88m (12-8.75). Makayla Miles was also seventh (3.73m, 12-2.75, personal best, 43rd in Division II).
 
Lily Beneke was a winner in hammer throw with a meet record toss of 56.91m (186-08).

Minnesota State men's track and field continues into the postseason next week, with competition at the NSIC Outdoor Championships May 8-10 at James S. Malosky Stadium in Duluth, Minnesota.
