DULUTH, Minn. – Minnesota State women's track and field won its fourth straight NSIC Outdoor Track and Field Championship Saturday afternoon at James S. Malosky Stadium, hosted by Minnesota Duluth. The No. 5 nationally ranked Mavericks assembled 224 points through 21 events to finish ahead of UMary (143), Augustana (88), Sioux Falls (78) and Winona State (57).
"Winning both titles shows the strength, unity, and drive of our program," said head coach
Mike Turgeon. "I'm proud of the athletes, coaches, and support staff who made this moment possible."
The Mavericks excelled on the third and final day of competition. In 4x100 meter relay, MSU took second place with a time of 45.68. The team included
Adeyah Brewster,
Miranda Lauvstad,
Ally Hammond and
Norah D'Almeida.
Next on the track was 1500 meters.
Ashley Overgaauw took second place with a time of 4:33.85.
After setting a blistering pace in prelims, Minnesota State dominated the 100 meter hurdle finals on Saturday. Brewster led the way again, with a time of 13.13 (2
nd in Division II this season).
Grace Johnson was second in 13.36 and
Ashanti Harvey was third in 13.47 (5
th in Division II). With six of the eight finals qualifiers,
Noemie Thibaud crossed the line fourth (13.67), followed by Hammond in fifth (13.72) and
Esaba Okwaramoi in seventh (14.00).
Brianna Shroyer and
Robynn Rolle-Curry took fifth and sixth respectively in 400 meters. Then Brewster turned in a third place performance in 100 meter dash finals with a time of 11.50.
Isabela Shepard posted a fifth place time in 800 meters and
Viktoriia Ermolaeva set a personal best in 400 meter hurdles in third place (1:01.62).
UMary took four of the top five spots in 200 meters. D'Almeida was sixth for the Mavericks (24.55).
Madison Matzek ran to fourth place in 5000 meters with a time of 17:26.55 (season best).
Last on the track, the 4x400 meter relay clocked UMary just ahead of Minnesota State, with MSU's team of
Elizabeth Schmidt, Shroyer, Ermolaeva and
Grace Obour coming across in 3:49.99.
Maya Shorter collected third place in javelin throw after landing at 40.29m (132-02). Shorter topped her previous career best with the mark (72
nd in Division II). Graduate student
Kassidy Siedow finished fifth with a heave of 39.69m (130-03).
Elise Jensen led the Mavericks in discus with a second place mark at 48.17m (158-00). Reilly Young (Wayne State) finished first when she set the facility record (50.28m, 164-11).
A facility record also fell to MSU's
Ghada Hamdani in triple jump. Hamdani leaped 12.6m (41-4.50)(6
th in Division II).
Stella Neophytou was second (12.08m, 39-7.75) and Harvey took fourth (11.83m, 38-9.75).
Alexa Post closed out day three of heptathlon competition in fifth place. The junior scored 4,685 points.
On Friday, Matzek finished second in 3000 meter steeplechase.
Elvira Collvin won the pole vault and
Lily Beneke took home first place in hammer throw. Thibaud was also second in high jump and
Emma Osier was first in shot put in the final field event of the day.
Saturday marked MSU's sixth NSIC Women's Outdoor Track & Field Championship.
Minnesota State women's track and field continues at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships May 22-24 at the CSU Pueblo Thunderbowl in Pueblo, Colorado.
