MANKATO, Minn. – The No. 8-ranked Minnesota State Mavericks (35-4, 27-3 NSIC) are set to return to Bowyer Field this Wednesday for a midweek doubleheader against Concordia-St. Paul (17-23, 13-17 NSIC). First pitch is slated for 1:30 p.m. Game one can be heard locally on AM 1230 The Fan Mankato. Both games will be streamed live for free on the NSIC Network.
Last Time Out
The Mavericks are coming off a dominant weekend performance at Minnesota Crookston, sweeping the Golden Eagles in a three-game series. MSU opened the weekend with a 23-2 blowout on Friday, followed by a 5-2 and 7-0 doubleheader sweep on Saturday.
In the Friday opener, the Mavericks exploded for seven runs in the second inning and added eight more in the fifth, featuring back-to-back home runs by
Louis Magers and
Brandon Vlcko.
Saturday's game one saw
Nathan Culley improve to 9-0 on the season, maintaining a conference-best 2.09 ERA.
Zach Stroh added a solo homer to help seal the 5-2 win.
In the series finale,
Matthew Fleischhacker,
Aidan Byrne, and
Ike Mezzenga each went 3-for-5 at the plate. Magers also doubled in a run and struck out five over five innings to move to 5-0 on the season. Byrne added two RBI doubles, while Mezzenga led the team with three RBI. Fleischhacker now sits one walk away from setting the all-time career record at MSU and Mezzenga sits four home runs away from setting the all-time season record at MSU.
Scouting the Bears
Concordia-St. Paul enters the series after dropping two of three to Augustana last weekend, picking up a 6-4 win in game three.
The Bears are led at the plate by Bennett McCollow, who is hitting .326 with six home runs and 17 RBI. On the mound, Ian Segna leads the pitching staff with a 4.05 ERA and a 5-2 record.
