Mavericks Tie Huskies, Prevail in Shootout

MANKATO, Minn. – Jessie McPherson made 30 saves and Taylor Otremba scored in the final round of a shootout as Minnesota State tied No. 11 St. Cloud State 2-2 in overtime Saturday afternoon at Mayo Clinic Health System Event Center.
 
Claire Vekich (10) and Bella Shipley (5) also scored for the Mavericks in regulation in the WCHA women's hockey matchup. The Mavericks (11-17-2, 5-17-2 WCHA) continue at Minnesota Duluth next Friday/Saturday with four games remaining in the regular season.
 
Sofianna Sundelin scored an unassisted goal eight minutes into the opening period to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead. Vekich struck back at even strength at 16:08 with assists from Alexis Paddington (6) and JuliAnna Gazdik (15).
 
Bella Shipley made it 2-1 in the second period with an even strength marker from Jenessa Gazdik (9) and Kamyrn Van Batavia (3). McPherson stopped 14 shots in the second period and the Mavericks killed off three minutes of a major penalty, but Avery Farrell tied the game at 9:14 in the third period for SCSU to send the game to overtime.
 
The Huskies outshot the Mavericks 5-1 in the extra session but McPherson held steady. The shootout went to round five after Siiri Yrjola scored for SCSU and JuliAnna Gazdik posted a goal for Minnesota State. After McPherson stopped Emma Gentry's attempt, Otremba stickhandled in and scored on the forehand.
 
Sanni Ahola made 27 saves for the Huskies. The Mavericks went 0-4 on the power play while St. Cloud State finished 0-3. The Huskies are in fifth place in the WCHA standings with 32 points. Minnesota State is in sixth with 20 points.
