#2 Minnesota State Overpowers #24 Concordia-St. Paul

MANKATO, Minn. — On Saturday, Dec. 6 the Minnesota State women's basketball team (9-0, 3-0 NSIC) defeated Concordia-St. Paul (5-3, 1-2 NSIC) with a commanding 38-point margin and a 53-41 rebounding advantage at the Taylor Center. The No. 2-ranked Mavericks secured their first ranked win of the season against the No. 24 Golden Bears, capitalizing on turnovers, scoring 26 points off 26 CSP giveaways.

Senior guard Hannah Herzig hit a career high with 19 points, including three 3-pointers, along with three blocks and three steals, shooting 5-8 from the field, 3-3 from the arc, and 6-6 from the line. Ava Stier dominated the boards with 13 rebounds, including five on the offensive end. Senior Adeline Kent contributed defensively with three steals and four rebounds. Natalie Bremer scored 18 points, hitting 6 of 10 from the field and converting 6 of 8 free throws, while also collecting seven rebounds and two steals. 

Minnesota State began the first quarter with strong defensive pressure, forcing turnovers and converting them into points in transition. Herzig contributed early with two key free throws, while Bremer's fastbreak layup extended the home team's lead. The Mavericks capitalized on the Golden Bears' turnovers, with Haylee Stokes and Lucy Leininger each securing steals to maintain momentum.

The Golden Bears managed to keep pace initially through an early 3-pointer, but MSU responded effectively at both ends of the court. Rhyan Holmgren and Elisabeth Gadient added crucial baskets, and Stier's free throws further widened the gap. Minnesota State closed the quarter by maintaining their offensive rhythm and securing a 26-18 lead.

The Mavericks began the second quarter with a strong defensive stance, forcing multiple turnovers from the Golden Bears. Stier grabbed a defensive rebound early, leading to a scoring opportunity by Bremer, who made a layup to extend the lead. Holmgren followed up with two successful free throws after an offensive rebound to further build on their momentum. As the CSP attempted to close the gap, Minnesota State maintained their pressure. Gadient and Stokes each contributed with timely jumpers, keeping the home team ahead. Defensively, Delaynie Luneckas added a block and a defensive rebound, killing the visitors' attempts to gain ground.

Closing the quarter, MSU capitalized on turnovers with a 3-pointer from Herzig, assisted by Stier, solidifying their lead. The Mavericks outscored the Golden Bears 22-14 in the quarter, bringing the score to 48-32 at the half.

Minnesota State opened the third quarter with a decisive 3-pointer from Herzig, setting the tone for a strong performance. The team capitalized on turnovers and defensive stops, with Gadient contributing significantly through assists and scoring in the paint. The home team controlled the pace with a strong inside presence, scoring 16 points in the paint and securing 9 points off turnovers. The Mavericks maintained their momentum, closing the quarter with a commanding lead of 79–51 over the Golden Bears.

In the fourth quarter, MSU continued to assert control, beginning with Stier's jumper at 9:38, set up by Leininger's assist. The home team efficiently shot 10-for-15 from the field, including three 3-pointers, and added to their lead with a balanced attack. Holmgren contributed with defensive stops, securing rebounds and scoring in transition.

The Golden Bears managed to find the basket with six field goals, but the Mavericks' defensive rebounds limited second-chance opportunities. Minnesota State maintained pressure, forcing six turnovers and converting points off fast breaks. Minnesota State wrapped up the matchup with a decisive 104–66 finish.

In their next game, the Mavericks will host Wayne State on Thursday, Dec. 11, at 7:30 p.m. at the Taylor Center in Mankato, Minn.
