#2 Mavericks Defeat Wayne State, Improve to 10–0

MANKATO, Minn. — Minnesota State women's basketball continued its unbeaten start on Thursday, Dec. 11 as the No. 2-ranked Mavericks improved to 10-0 overall and 4-0 in NSIC play with a 90-63 victory over Wayne State inside the Taylor Center. MSU's defensive pressure set the tone throughout the contest, forcing 25 turnovers that translated into 35 points on the offensive end.

Lake City, Minn. native Natalie Bremer led the team with 21 points, converting 7 of 14 field goals and all seven free throws, while also collecting six rebounds. Mackenzie Schweim added 14 points, making 5 of 21 shots and draining three 3-pointers. Senior guard Adeline Kent recorded seven points and contributed defensively with four steals. Ava Stier finished with 13 points, hitting 5 of 7 field goals, including three from beyond the arc, and added three steals.

MSU opened the first quarter with a strong defensive effort, capitalizing on Wayne State's turnovers to gain early momentum. A series of successful three-point shots, including contributions from Schweim and Haylee Stokes, helped build a significant lead. The team showcased effective ball movement with six assists and maintained pressure with four steals. 

The home team extended their lead by finishing the quarter efficiently, thanks to Hannah Herzig's fast-break layup and Bremer's jumper. MSU closed the quarter ahead, 29-12, establishing a commanding presence on the court.

Minnesota State opened the second quarter by tightening its defensive pressure and converting efficiently on the offensive end. The Mavericks recorded 10 steals in the period, consistently turning turnovers into points to keep control of the game's tempo. MSU continued to build its advantage as Schweim knocked down a timely three pointer, before Herzig capped the half with a three and a jumper. Minnesota State entered the break holding a commanding 49–24 lead.

Defensive pressure set the tone to begin the third quarter, as Stier's steal led to a fast break jumper by Bremer in the opening seconds. Wayne State generated some offense in the paint, but the Mavericks maintained control by scoring inside and out while continuing to force turnovers. Stier knocked down a three pointer at the 1:23 mark off an assist from Hannah Leverson, and Bremer added consistent scoring from the field and the free throw line. The period closed with MSU extending its lead, highlighted by Stier's buzzer beating three to take a 74–50 advantage into the fourth quarter.

The Mavericks continued to dictate play in the fourth quarter, opening the period with a jumper from Shantell Harden set up by Leverson. Minnesota State preserved its lead through disciplined defensive rebounding and efficient free throw shooting, keeping WSC at bay. Bremer added to the margin with a layup and trip to the line, while Mallory Czinano and Kent chipped in down the stretch. MSU's defense stayed active with four steals in the quarter, closing out a 90–63 victory.

Up next, the Mavericks return to the Taylor Center for their final home contest of the calendar year, welcoming Augustana on Saturday, Dec. 13. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in Mankato, Minn.
