STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The No. 12 Minnesota State wrestling team turned in a strong performance at the 2025 Pointer Open, hosted by University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point on Saturday.
Walker Bents,
Caleb Meunier and
Drake Hayward highlighted the day with first place individual finishes. All three turned in first place results at the same meet last season.

At 125 pounds,
Jacob Fitzpatrick defeated Nick Needham (Luther College) by major decision before losing by decision to Dylan Duvernay (Parkside) 4-2. Fitzpatrick battled back to a pair of wins before falling to Mason Jones in the third-place match.

Chase Beckett claimed fifth place for the Mavericks. Starting with a 7-3 decision over Lincoln Flayter (Parkside), Beckett lost by decision to Ethan Spacht (North Central) 4-0 and Connor Krueger (Saint John's) 10-7.
Cael Morrow won by tech fall over Jeison Ingram (Concordia Moorhead), then lost to Ethan Spacht (North Central). Morrow closed with a 12-6 decision over Nasir Christion (Manchester).
Logan Schwanz was a 9-5 opening round winner by decision over Adrian Origel (Manchester). Schwanz picked up a 12-8 win by decision over Kie Anderson (Concordia Moorhead), then lost by 13-8 decision to Matthew Chi (Parkside) and 8-5 decision to Connor Krueger (Saint John's) in the third place bout.

At 141 pounds,
Connor Crumer lost his opening round match to Brock Bobzien (Wisconsin). Crumer picked up a pair of subsequent wins but lost to Simon Kruse (Wisconsin) by tech fall.
Camden Mustachia lost to Jacob Bennett to start, then Logan Harel (Wisconsin-Oshkosh) by decision.
Kaiden Dietzenbach won four straight matches before losing to Aboo Assaf in the title match. [12]
Colton Hush dropped his opening round to Joshua Robison (North Central) by decision, then Emmett Nelson (Parkside).
Lucas Ryan grabbed a 2-0 decision over Jake Buss, then lost to Jordan Craft (Parkside) and Joshua Robinson (North Central).

Walker Bents took the title for Minnesota State. After wins over Brody Arthur (Manchester), Henry Niebauer (Parkside), and Royce Nilo (Wisconsin), Bents won by major decision 8-0 over Elliott Biba (Wisconsin). MSU's
James Salas lost to Henry Niebauer (Parkside) in his first bout.

Caleb Meunier had a strong start to his 2025-26 campaign with a first place finish. Meunier dismissed four opponents before besting Cameron Johnson (Aurora University) for the title.
Kain Sanders also competed well at 157, and collected three wins before falling to Cameron Johnson in the semifinals by tech fall.
Aden Welcome lost in his first appearance on the mat to Daniel Ward (North Central) by decision 13-12.

Kaleb Lochner won against Gage Decker (Wisconsin-Whitewater) but lost in the following two rounds.
Paolo Salminen won four straight matches. Salminen lost by major decision to Clayton McDonough (Luther College) to take second place in his class.

Drake Hayward prevailed in the championship round, defeating Bryce McDonough (Luther College) by decision 6-4. Hayward won three prior matches to get to the final match.

Jaquan East won by tech fall against Jovanni Piazza (North Central), then lost by major decision to Sam Schwabe (Parkside).

At 197 pounds,
Derrick Steinke lost by decision 10-4 to Kaden Hooker (Parkside). Steinke bounced back for a win by tech fall over Jason Hohensee.
Grant Cook finished his day with a win in consolation over Desmond Walker (Wisconsin-Oshkosh).

At 285 pounds,
Makota Misgen won a pair of matches, then fell in the semifinals to Elijah Osit (Aurora University) by major decision 17-3.
Jesus Gonzalez and
Joshua Gaye each won opening round matches. Gaye moved past Gonzalez and took fifth place for the Mavericks.

The Mavericks continue at the Luther Open in Decorah, Iowa on Saturday, November 15 at Gerdin Fieldhouse before beginning the NSIC schedule at Sioux Falls on December 5.
