Minnesota State to Take On UMary and Minot

Mavericks Travel to North Dakota this Week

What Lies Ahead: Minnesota State continues their conference dual season, starting in Bismarck, N.D. tonight, Jan. 5th, 2025. The dual against University of Mary is set to start at 5 p.m. The Mavericks then travel to Minot tomorrow to face Minot State at 7 p.m.

About Minnesota State: MSU holds a 4-1 overall record, 1-0 NSIC record. The Mavericks have four ranked wrestlers from the National Wrestling Coaches' Association: No. 13 R-Fr. Walker Bents at 149-lb., No. 12 junior Caleb Meunier at 157-lb., No. 14 junior Kole Marko at 165-lb., and No. 13 R-Jr. Drake Hayward at 174-lb.

About UMary: The Marauders are 1-1 overall, with a 1-1 NSIC record. The Marauders are ranked #11 nationally with three wrestlers ranked in the Top 10 of the NWCA Poll as of Dec. 23, 2024. UMary is led by head coach Adam Aho, who is in his 12th year as head coach with the program.

About Minot State: Minot State is 0-1 in NSIC duals and 2-1 overall. The Beavers' Jake Swirple is ranked seventh at 285-lb. Head coach Evan Forde leads Minot State in his 10th year with the Beavers.

Last Time Out: The Mavericks had an impressive performance at the Desert Duals in Las Vegas, Nev. on Dec 21st. The Mavericks won all three duals against CSU-Pueblo (32-10), Vanguard University (46-5), and Menlo College (30-11).

The Makovsky File: In his 32nd year with Minnesota State, head coach Jim Makovsky holds an impressive 309-135-3 career record, the most in program history. Makovsky has coached 12 Individual National Champions, 96 NCAA All-Americans, and has been inducted into the NCAA DII Wrestling Coaches Hall of Fame.

National Appearances: Minnesota State made an appearance on the podium in the 2022-23 season with senior Darrell Mason, at 285 lb., finishing third. Mason held a 17-4 record, became a two-time NCAA All-American, and earned the Minnesota State Senior Male Athlete of the Year Honor. Mason was also the national champion at 285 lb. his junior year with a perfect 22-0 record.
