MADISON, Wis. – Minnesota State (10-11-1, 4-11-1 WCHA) dropped the second game of a WCHA series to top-ranked Wisconsin (22-1-1, 17-1-1 WCHA) in a 3-1 battle Sunday afternoon in Madison.
The Mavericks held the Badgers scoreless for most of the first period, but Wisconsin broke through in the 17th minute to take a 1-0 lead. A defensive standoff ensued in the second period, with neither team able to score.
The Badgers added two more goals in the third period to extend their lead. Minnesota State responded in the 13th minute of the final period when
Alexis Paddington found the back of the net, assisted by
Jamie Nelson and
Jayden Seifert, bringing the score to 3-1.
"Proud of our team's effort today. We challenged them to close out plays early and play physical to try to limit the time and space the Badgers had. Thought our D did a great job boxing out in front of the net to allow Hailey to see the puck. Hailey gave us a chance with her career-high fifty save performance." Said head coach
Shari Dickerman.
Goaltender
Hailey Hansen had an outstanding performance, making a career-high 50 saves on 53 shots bringing her save percentage to .919.
"We'll get back to work this week, but the effort we played with this weekend will win some hockey games down the stretch." Stated Dickerman.
The Mavericks will look to rebound next weekend as they face the No. 3 Minnesota. They will travel to Minneapolis for Friday's game before hosting the Golden Gophers in Mankato on Saturday.
