MANKATO, Minn. --- Minnesota State (32-15, 27-9 NSIC) swept Tuesday's doubleheader against Wayne State (25-19, 20-14 NSIC) in dramatic fashion at Bowyer Field.
After the Wildcats managed to plate their lead-off runner to open the game, the Mavericks quickly responded in the bottom of the first to take a 2-1 lead.
Junior
Zach Stroh jumped started the MSU offense with a two-out double to center field and later scored on a sophomore
Louis Magers double. Junior
Nick Baker then collected his 36th RBI of the season on a single through the left side of the diamond scoring Magers to claim the early lead.
Following a three-run third inning for Wayne State, the Mavericks were faced with a 4-2 deficit heading into the bottom of the seventh.
Junior
Lincoln Berry got the rally started with a single to left field and advanced to second on junior
Aidan Byrne's second hit of the game setting up senior
Ryan Wickman. On a 1-0 count, Wickman blasted his 12th home run of the season giving Minnesota State its 31st win of the season.
After the Mavericks found themselves down a run again in game two, junior
Lincoln Berry deposited a first-pitch fastball over the right field fence for a two-run homer giving the Mavericks their first lead of game two in the bottom of the second.
Wickman and Berry would continue to swing hot bats in the bottom of the third to extend MSU's lead to 5-2.
The Wayne State offense would wake up and outscore the Mavericks 8-1 through the next five innings handing the Mavericks a four-run deficit heading into the bottom of the ninth.
Sophomore
Matthew Fleischhacker and junior
Nick Baker began MSU's rally working lead-off walks. The next batter, Berry would collect his season-high sixth RBI of the game on an RBI triple to center field scoring both Fleischhacker and Baker. After sophomore
Tanner Thompson worked a walk, senior
Adam Weed ripped a double into the left-center gap to tie the game at ten.
In the bottom of the eleventh, Byrne, Wickman, and Stroh all managed to get on base with no out for the Mavericks home run leader, sophomore
Louis Magers. Magers blasted his second grand slam of the season walking off the Wildcats for the second time today.
"We showed a great deal of resilience and toughness to ride the ups and downs of both games, head coach
Matt Magers stated. "These were two big conference wins and it took contributions from everyone."
Minnesota State will wrap up its 2024 regular season schedule against Southwest Minnesota State with a three-game series starting Friday at noon.
