Maverick Relays Shine at Drake

DES MOINES, Iowa --- The Minnesota State men's track and field team repeated as the Drake Relays Cup Champion after a strong showing this past weekend as the Big Blue Oval.
 
The Drake Relays Cup is awarded to the school which scores the most points in the 4x100, 4x400, 4x800, sprint medley, and distance medley relay teams.
 
The Mavericks won the sprint medley relay (200-200-400-800) with a time of 3:27.71, just edging out Northern State's relay team who finished second with a 3:27.79. The Maverick foursome consisted of junior Marvin Dure, junior Jabez Reeves, junior Junior Pontes Da Veiga and freshman Paul Lins.
 
The 4x100-meter relay squad of freshman Armando Colome, junior Jabez Reeves, freshman Richlu Tudee and senior Shemar Miller finished second with a time of 39.96.  The 4x400-meter relay team of Reeves, Dure, Pontes Da Veiga and Hussey was also second with a time of 3:10.73.
 
Minnesota State's shuttle hurdle relay team of senior Renald Pierre, junior Jalen McGee, freshman Anthony Collins and sophomore Owen Petersohn finished third with a time of 58.30.
 
The 4x800-meter relay team of sophomore Leif Larsen, sophomore Jacob Bennett, junior Ray Ure and Lins was sixth with a time of 7:43.20.  The distance medley relay team (1200-400-800-1600) finished tenth with a time of 10:17.85. That relay team consisted Larsen, junior Kyler Bade, sophomore Bennett and Ure.
 
Individually, Reeves finished fourth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.57. In the University/College Championship Division, senior James Gilbert finished second in the long jump with a leap of 7.42-meters (24'4 ¼"), while McGee was seventh in the University/College Division in the long jump with a leap of 7.31-meters (23'11 ¾").
 
Senior Onyekachi Ukaobasi was second in the University/College Championship Division in the triple jump with a jump of 15.18-meters (49'9 ¾"). Senior Camwrin Harris was fifth in the same division with a leap of 14.68-meters (48'2") while junior Jordan Spencer was eighth with a jump of 14.46-meters (47'5 ¼").
 
Senior Steven Orzolek was seventh in the shot put with a toss of 16.50-meters (54'1 ¾") while fellow senior Carter Aguilera was eighth in the discus with a throw of 53.41-meters (175'2"). In the javelin, junior Liam Byrne was ninth at 53.58-meters (175'9").
 
Also competition at the Drake Relays for the Mavericks: junior Armando Colome (100-meters, 15th, 10.60), senior Nicholas Sharma (100-metres, 26th, 10.81), Hussey (400-meters, 12th, 48.15), McGee (100-meter hurdles, 15th, 14.54), Pierre (100-meter hurdles, 20th, 14.97), Collins (400-meter hurdles, 14th, 53:29), Petersohn (400-meter hurdles, 15th, 53.37), junior Slade Heald (long jump, 11th, 7.10-meters (23'3 ½")), sophomore Ben Wieser (Shot put, 17th, 15.49-meters (50'10")).
 
Minnesota State returns to action this week as it hosts a pair of open events on May 1st and May 4th.
