D’Almeida Takes First at Gary Wilson Invitational

MINNEAPOLIS – The Minnesota State women's outdoor track and field team traveled north today to compete at the Gary Wilson Invite hosted by the University of Minnesota.
 
In the 100m dash, sophomore Norah D'Almeida ran a time of 12.17s to take home first in the event. Just behind in second was freshman Le'Nehja Norwood with a time of 12.24s. Freshman Esaba Okwaramoi ran the 100m hurdles in a time of 14.48 to place fifth and rank 14th on the MSU all-time top outdoor performances list.
 
Norwood also competed in the 200m dash, placing fifth with a time of 25.53s, followed by D'Almeida in eighth after crossing the line at 26.03s.
 
In the 400m dash, sophomores Grace Hambel and Kaia Martz placed ninth (58.74s) and tenth (58.54s), respectively.
 
Senior MaKenna Thurston ran the 800m with a time of 2:09.98 to finish fifth, move to fourth on the MSU all-time list, and break the meet record.
 
Looking to field events, in the high jump, junior Olivia Solis cleared a height of 1.56m (5' 1.25") to place fourth. Junior Molly Kahl placed fifth in the long jump with a leap of 5.33m (17' 6"), along with freshman Lillian Strong finishing in fifth after a jump of 5.16m (16' 11.25").
 
Surpassing the meet record in the pole vault, senior Paige Hickson took second with a height of 4.08m (13' 4.5"). Finishing in sixth, freshman Hope Stangel cleared 3.63m (11' 10.75") to rank 13th on the MSU all-time list.
 
Freshman Maya Shorter took fourth in the javelin event, with a distance of 36.95m (121' 2") and now ranks eighth on the MSU all-time list.
 
In the discus throw, senior Mack Rath placed fifth with a toss of 43.43m (142' 6"), along with freshman Aubri Brown throwing for 42.55m (139' 7") to finish in seventh for the event.
 
With a throw of 49.52m (162' 5"), freshman Lauren Bird finished eighth in the hammer throw, ranking 12th on the MSU all-time list. Brown finished tenth in the event after a throw of 47.87m (157'). Bird also competed in the shot put, placing seventh with a heave of 13.09m (42' 11.5").
 
Competition continues this week for the Mavericks tomorrow, April 25th, in Des Moines, Iowa at the Drake Relays.
