Eighth Inning Rally Propels Mavericks Past Golden Eagles

MANKATO, Minn. --- Minnesota State (25-14, 21-8 NSIC) scored eight runs in the bottom of the eighth to overcome a five-run deficit against Minnesota Crookston (25-13, 19-9 NSIC) winning by a final of 8-5 Sunday afternoon at Bowyer Field.

After the Mavericks managed only four hits through seven innings against UMC's starting pitcher Brody Sorenson, Minnesota State found its footing in the eighth inning putting up eight runs for the second time this season.

Juniors Aidan Byrne, Zach Stroh, and senior Ryan Friedges opened the inning working two walks and a hit to load the bases for senior Ryan Wickman who flied out to the left fielder providing the Mavericks' first run of the inning.

On the next play, sophomore Louis Magers hit a ball to UMC's first baseman who threw the ball into the outfield for Minnesota Crookstons' first error on the day allowing Byrne to score on the play and setting up junior Lincoln Berry with runners on the corners with no outs. Berry would take advantage sending a ball down the left field line scoring both Stroh and Magers to pull Minnesota State to within a run.

In his second at-bat of the inning, senior Ryan Friedges launched his fourth three-run home run of the season giving the Mavericks their first lead of the day.

Junior Spencer Wright (5-3) would come in to close the door on the Golden Eagles earning his fifth win of the season.

"Impressive come-from-behind win against a very good team. We were down but not out," head coach Matt Magers stated. "Our bullpen was able to provide five shutdown innings allowing for our offense to go to work to pull off the win."

The Mavericks are back in action on Tuesday as the host Northwestern College at 2 p.m. at Boywer Field.
