Minnesota States Drops Saturday Doubleheader Against Golden Eagles

MANKATO, Minn. --- Minnesota State (24-14, 20-8 NSIC) dropped today's doubleheader against Minnesota Crookston (25-12, 19-8 NSIC) by finals of 3-2 and 8-4 at Bowyer Field.

The Mavericks jumped out to an early 2-0 lead against the Golden Eagles in game one courtesy of two solo home runs from senior Ryan Wickman (8) and sophomore Louis Magers (9). Minnesota State was unable to sustain its two-run lead after falling short at the plate dropping game one by a final of 3-2.

MSU continued to falter early in game two as it faced a 7-0 deficit heading into the bottom of the fourth. The Mavericks showed signs of life in their half of the fourth after stringing together five hits that resulted in four runs.

Junior Nick Baker led off the inning with an infield single to the shortstop and later advanced to third on two singles from sophomore Matthew Fleischhacker and senior Hunter Ranweiler. Sophomore Tanner Thompson then scorched a ball down the left-field line for a double resulting in his 17th and 18th RBI of the season.

Senior Ryan Friedges would later single to left field scoring H. Ranweiler while Thompson came home on a junior Aidan Byrne sacrifice fly to cut into UMC's lead, 7-4.

Minnesota State was unable to climb the rest of the mountain falling to the Golden Eagle in game two by a final of 8-4.

Minnesota State is back in action on tomorrow and will look to avoid the series sweep against Minnesota Crookston. The first pitch is scheduled for noon at Bowyer Field.
