MANKATO, Minn. – Minnesota State men's hockey has announced its 2023-24 team award winners.
The winner of the Don Brose Leadership Award was senior
Sam Morton (Lafayette, Colorado). Morton was the Maverick team captain this season and led the team to the CCHA semifinals in March. Morton was also named the Dr. Wallace Mathews Most Valuable Player. He was the CCHA Forward of the Year and a Top-10 Hobey Baker Award finalist. In 37 games, Morton finished with 24 goals and 10 assists for 34 points.
His nine power-play tallies ranked eighth in the nation. Morton signed a professional contract with the Calgary Flames organization. In 11 games with the Calgary Wranglers (AHL), Morton has three goals, two assists, five points and four penalty minutes. Also skating for the Wranglers are former Mavericks Walker Duehr and
David Silye.
The Vets Club Hardest Worker Award went to junior
Josh Groll (San Diego, California). In 34 games played, Groll posted seven goals and 13 assists for 29 points, held a plus-1 rating with one game-winning goal.
Sophomore
Tyler Haskins (Rochester, Minnesota) took home the Henry Okleshen Most Improved Player award. In 18 games this season, Haskins scored four goals with a pair of assists for six points with an even plus-minus rating. He also scored two game-winning goals for the Mavericks. Haskins came to MSU from Denver, where he played 13 games as a freshman and recorded one assist.
The Charles W. Fisher Unsung Player Award was given to sophomore netminder
Alex Tracy (Chicago, Illinois), the fifth time the award has been given to a goaltender. Tracy appeared in 30 games with 28 starts. He held a 13-10-3 record with two shutouts, a 2.50 goals against average and .910 save percentage.
Sam Morton was the winner of the Maverick 3-Star Award. Throughout the season, the Three Stars of the Game are awarded to the top performers at each home game and are chosen by media in attendance. The final tally for the 2023-24 season is listed below.
