Minnesota State Awarded Top Spot in Final WBCA Coaches’ Poll Rankings

MANKATO, Minn. – Minnesota State women's hoops (32-5), after winning the NCAA DII National Championship, was ranked the top team in the nation in the final edition of the WBCA Coaches' Poll.

The Mavericks were previously ranked 13th in the last regular season ranking from the Women's Basketball Coaches Association. Heading into the season, Minnesota State was ranked second in the country in the association's Preseason Poll.

Minnesota State won its second national championship in program history on Friday, March 29. After dominating Southern Nazarene in the NCAA Central Region Championship, MSU defeated Georgia Southwestern in the Elite Eight, 93-88. The team pulled out another tight win against Cal State San Marcos, winning 70-68 thanks to a game-winning layup with 0.3 seconds left from Emily Herzberg. Sophomore guard Natalie Bremer scored 29 points and finished with nine rebounds in the game against the Cougars. Mavericks defeated the Texas Woman's University Pioneers in the championship game, 89-73. Bremer had another great performance, scoring 27, leading the Mavericks to a national title. She was named the Most Outstanding Player of the Tournament and All-American guard Joey Batt was named to the All-Tournament Team for her excellent performance.

The team tied a program record with 32 wins, including a 20-2 NSIC record, winning its third regular season conference championship. During the regular season, the Mavericks won a program-record 19 games between late November and mid-February. Minnesota State won its first conference tournament, defeating UMary in the NSIC Tournament Championship, 89-74. After starting the season 2-4, the team went 30-1, later beating every team they fell to.
