Minnesota State Downs #4 Minnesota in Game One of the WCHA Quarterfinals

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn.. --- Minnesota State (13-23-0) downed #4 Minnesota (25-8-2) in game one of the WCHA Quarterfinals by a final of 5-4 Friday night at Ridder Arena.

After seeing the Gophers go up two scores midway through the second period, the Mavericks relied on its gritty third line to provide a spark. Within just 17 seconds of Minnesota's second goal, sophomore Alexis Paddington collected the opening faceoff to then punch through the Gophers' defense.

Paddington hit the iron on her shot with the rebound ricocheting to senior Kennedy Bobyck in the slot who hammered home her sixth score of the year and first on the night for the Mavericks.

Minnesota State would notch their second goal in the dying minutes of the second period after junior Claire Vekich intercepted a Gophers breakout pass in the offensive zone and slid a pass to freshman Kamryn Van Batavia on the side of the net looking for an opportunity. Van Batavia would find senior Jamie Nelson on the back door for her 19th goal on the season giving the Mavericks their first lead of the night.

Minnesota State would continue riding its momentum into the third period as senior Madison Mashuga found the back of the net after beating a Minnesota defender in a foot race going five-hole on a breakaway.

After Minnesota responded four minutes later, Nelson showcased her puck-handling skills as she danced through the Gophers' defense and lifted a backhand shot over Minnesota's Skylar Vetter for her 20th goal on the season.

Minnesota responded again just four minutes later setting the stage for a dramatic finish. With two minutes remaining in the final period, Nelson and senior Charlotte Akervik teamed up on a two-on-one. Akervik's shot hit the pad of Vetter leaving a rebound for freshman Kamryn Van Batavia to hammer home her first game-winning goal of her collegiate career.

Freshman Hailey Hansen collected her fourth win on the season after stopping 21 of 25 shots.

"It was a great effort from our team tonight after getting down early," stated head coach John Harrington. "We will enjoy tonight but will come to the rink tomorrow with the mindset of taking one game at a time."

The Mavericks are back in action tomorrow as they look to collect their second victory over Minnesota to advance in the WCHA playoffs. The action is scheduled to start at 3 p.m. from Ridder Arena.
