HANOVER, N.H. –
Jenessa Gazdik scored the last of three power play goals and Minnesota State topped Dartmouth 3-2 in overtime Saturday afternoon at Thompson Arena in non-conference women's hockey.
Â
With a 4-on-3 advantage and under one minute remaining in the extra session, Gazdik created space at the top of the left circle and found the twine for her first tally of the year, sending Minnesota State to a series sweep in Hanover.
"Our special teams came through for us this afternoon," said head coach
Shari Dickerman. "We had power play success, but (Dartmouth's) goaltender was outstanding. We generated 24 shots in the third period and kept our foot on the gas. I am proud of our group for finding a way to get the job done."
Â
The power play success began in the first period.
Taylor Otremba shot low from a sharp angle for her team-leading ninth goal of the season.
Madison Mashuga drew a defender at the top of the offensive zone, then passed it the
Sydney Langseth. Otremba received the puck at the goal line at 5:04 of the first period and buried the Mavericks' first power play goal since Oct. 5.
Â
Cally Dixon evened the score for Dartmouth with 17 seconds remaining in the period. After entering the zone and putting a high shot on goaltender
Hailey Hansen, Dixon poked in the rebound for the Big Green.
Â
The Mavericks regained the lead 7:31 into the second.
Alexis Paddington corralled a pass from
JuliAnna Gazdik and went top-shelf over the blocker of Michaela Hesová for her third of the year. Nelsen added the second assist on the power play marker and the Mavericks went to the locker room with a 2-1 edge, leading 21-16 in shots on goal.
Â
Izee Powell's shot from the point through traffic tied the game 2-2 just past the midway point of the third period. The Mavericks finished regulation on a 5-on-3 power play but could not convert, leading to overtime.
Â
MSU generated another great opportunity with a two-player advantage in OT but Hesová dove across the crease to keep it tied. Hesová then made a save on
Alexis Paddington's breakaway chance.
Â
Otremba and
JuliAnna Gazdik set up
Jenessa Gazdik's first career game-winner with 42 seconds remaining. Hansen made 21 saves in goal.
Â
Minnesota State (6-7-1, 2-7-1 WCHA) has won three straight games following a 4-1 victory over No. 2 Ohio State and 4-0 shutout over Dartmouth on Friday.
Â
Dartmouth (0-12-0, 0-8-0 ECAC) blocked 18 shots. The Big Green continue at Clarkson next weekend. The Mavericks finished 3-8 on the power play and killed 3-3 minor penalties. MSU posted a season-high 52 shots, including nine from Paddington (career high).
