MANKATO, Minn- Minnesota State (2-0-0) landed its first sweep of the season as it took down Long Island University by a final of 4-1 Saturday afternoon at the Mayo Clinic Health System Event Center.
The Sharks came out with a strong effort Saturday afternoon and had nine shots on goal in the first period, compared to the Mavericks' 11.
The Mavericks picked up where they left off Friday night with junior Taylor Otremba, scoring the first goal of the game in the 19th minute, with an assist from junior Whitney Tuttle.
MSU led 1-0 going into the second period. Just over two minutes into the second period, junior Lilie Ramirez found the back of the net with her first goal of the season. Claire Vekich and Kianna Roeske assisted.
At the 15:52 mark of the second period, senior Madison Mashuga notched her first goal of the season. On the play, junior Taylor Otremba added her first assist of the season.
In the first minute of the third period, sophomore Kamryn Van Batavia came in alone and buried the fourth goal for the Mavericks off the goalpost.
MSU's scoreless run came to an end in the second minute of the third period when LIUs Anya Weiandt scored the Sharks' first goal of the weekend.
In goal, senior Jessie McPherson recorded her first win in the Purple and Gold and improved to 1-0 on the season.
Minnesota State looks to continue its streak as they host St. Thomas on Oct 11th for a 3 pm puck drop. Taylor Otremba finished the weekend with three goals.
