Seaside, Calif. – The Minnesota State Mavericks (2-2) defeated the Dominican Penguins (0-3) in straight sets to close out their weekend at the Otter Volleyball Invitational Saturday evening.
Minnesota State were hot out of the gates, winning its first set 25-22. The Mavericks were able to dominate the next two sets, 25-13 and 25-17.
Kiya Durant led the Mavericks in kills with 10, followed by Emma Loveall, who had nine. Sophie Tietz led the squad with three aces and four blocks. The setter, Brooke Bolwerk, assisted on 37 points for Minnesota State. Junior Toryn Richards led the Mavericks in digs with five. Ellie Kline and Kendall White each had four digs.
Mavericks head coach Corey Phelps said about the win, "We're still learning how to play our best volleyball every point. We finished the weekend well and will look to carry this momentum into next weekend."
Phelps mentioned several players stepping up over the course of the weekend, including Elizabeth Dille, Tietz, Durant, Loveall and Bolwerk. "We're excited about the direction we're moving."
The Mavericks are on the road again next weekend, traveling to Hays, Kansas for the Tiger Classic. Minnesota State will play Cameron University and Southern Nazarene on Friday September 8, at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., respectively.
