Mackey Named to 2023 Men’s National Team

Mankato, Minn. --- Former Minnesota State men's hockey defenseman Connor Mackey will participate in the 2023 International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) Men's World Championship, which is scheduled to take place May 12-28 in Tampere, Finland and Riga, Latvia.

Mackey (MSU 2017-20), who will don the red, white and blue at the Senior Men's World Championships for the second time in his career, is a four-year veteran of in the National Hockey League.  Mackey started his career at Calgary where he played 19 games scoring two goals and tallying four assists before being traded to Arizona this past winter. 

As a member of the Coyotes, Mackey played in 20 games, scoring four points on a goal and three assists this past season. 

Named an AHCA/CCM West Second Team All-America following the conclusion of the 2019-20 season, Mackey had seven goals and 17 assists for 24 points in standing as Minnesota State's top-scoring defenseman that year. While twice earning WCHA Defenseman of the Week honors, Mackey led the Mavericks and ranked sixth in the nation with a +23 rating in 2019-20.  Mackey was selected to the WCHA's First Team as a junior after earning All-WCHA Third Team honors as a sophomore in 2018-19. Mackey was named to the WCHA All-Rookie

Team as a freshman in 2017-18.  The 6-2, 200-lb., left hand-shooting blue liner from Tower Lakes, Ill., posted 18-43--61 with a +47 rating and 92 blocked shots in 118 games in his three seasons with the Mavericks.

This is Mackey's second time being named to the Men's National Team at the IIHF World Championships, as he also played for Team USA in 2021.  Mackey saw action in seven games, tallying an assist in the bronze medal victory over Germany.

Mackey joins Teddy Blueger (Latvia 2016-17 and 2017-18), Marc Michaelis (Germany 2017-18 and 2018-19) and Evan Mosey (Great Britain 2018-19), along with Daniel Brickley and forwards Ryan Carter and David Backes,  who have all suited up for the United States, as former Mavericks who have played at the IIHF World Championships.  Brickley played for Team USA at the 2017 IIHF World Championship. Carter played in the 2010 and 2013 world championship tournaments, while Backes played in three world championship tournaments (2007, 2008 and 2009 with Team USA).
