Minnesota State Notches Both Wins In Double Header Against Davenport

Davenport, Fla. --- Minnesota State (6-3, 0-0 NSIC) earned a pair of one-run victories Saturday as it downed Davenport, 5-4 and 4-3, in its only doubleheader of the 2023 RussMatt Invitational Saturday.

After surrendering an early lead in the opener, freshman Louis Magers got the Mavericks on the board in the bottom of the third with an RBI single to left field scoring junior Adam Schneider who had reached base via a walk.

Later in the inning, junior Ryan Friedges reached on a fielding error, scoring sophomore Zach Stroh and Magers to take a 3-2 lead.

The Mavericks wouldn't look back after tacking on two more runs in the bottom of the fifth as junior Ryan Wickman drove in sophomore Aidan Byrne for MSU's fifth tally ensuring the 5-4 win.  Friedges took advantage of a wild pitch on the ensuing offering to round out the scoring.

Freshman Tanner Shumski (1-0) notched his first career win, going three innings for the Mavericks, allowing five hits and two earned runs.

Carson Fischer (1-2) got tagged with the loss going five innings surrendering five runs on eight hits.

In the second game, the Mavericks jumped to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first after junior Jackson Hauge tripled to right center driving in junior Ryan Wickman.  Hauge then scored on a wild pitch before sophomore Brock Johnson drew a walk.

Junior Mikey Gottschalk then doubled to right field bringing home Johnson and extending the Mavericks' lead to 3-0.

Minnesota State added an important insurance run in the top of the third as Johnson doubled to left and moved to third on a single before scoring on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Junior Adam Schneider, giving Minnesota State a 4-0 lead.

The Mavericks would hang on to win 4-3 improving to 7-3 on the season.

Sophomore Spencer Wright (1-0) notched his first win of the year putting in four innings of work while allowing three runs on six hits.

James Kohl (1-2) took the loss for the Panthers going one inning and surrendering three runs on two hits.

The Mavericks are back in action tomorrow in Auburndale, Fla., to take on Seton Hill University. The first pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. EST.
