Storm Lake, Iowa – The Minnesota State wrestling team traveled down to Storm Lake, Iowa this weekend to compete in the BVU Open, boasting seven top-six finishes.
 
Trayton Anderson, a junior transfer originating from Waterville, Minn., stood atop the 141-lb. podium today after a perfect 4-0 record to take first place. Receiving a bye first round and winning by a close 4-3 decision, Anderson won his quarterfinal match by an 11-3 major decision. After a huge 16-0 tech fall win in the semifinals to advance to the championship round, Anderson made quick work of Aiden Crawley (Iowa Lakes CC) with a fall at 0:15 to win the open.
 
Placing second at the open was sophomore Caleb Meunier at 157 pounds. Meunier started the day with two major decision wins, followed by two falls, one at 0:41 and the second 2:47, to find himself in the championships. Nolan Hertel (UW Lacrosse) won by a 7-3 decision to finish the 157-lb. bracket.
 
Five other Mavericks placed top six today in the open. 184-lb. freshman Brian Thilges took fourth today at 184 pounds with a 3-2 record, two wins by falls within the first period. Taking fifth at 133 pounds was Chase Beckett, recording two tech falls for a 4-1 record. Aden Welcome, at 157 pounds, also placed fifth today, winning by fall at 6:41 in the 5^th place match.
 
Sophomore Kole Marko (165-lb.) also took home a fifth place finish capped off with a win by fall at 1:44. Marko was also ranked fourteenth in the country this week by OpenMat (link attached HERE). Finishing out the tournament was junior Drake Hayward, placing fifth at 174 pounds with a 3-1 record.
 
Up next, the Mavericks travel down south to Phoenix, Ariz. for the annual Cactus Duals on Saturday, Dec. 16^th.
