1/22/2026 9:15:00 AM

MANKATO, Minn. – Minnesota State wrestling heads to North Dakota this weekend for NSIC duals against Jamestown (Saturday, 7 p.m. CT) and No. 14 UMary (Sunday, 1 p.m. CT). Both will be streamed on NSIC Network.

The Mavericks (10-3, 3-1) have won three straight duals, including six wins over ranked opponents this season. Already ahead of last year's 8-5 finish, the Mavericks made it to double-figure dual wins for the first time since 2019-20.

LAST TIME OUT
Head coach Jim Makovsky praised his team's preparation for Minot State, saying "the guys were consistent all week in process and performance." The Mavericks collected a 43-3 win at Taylor Center on Sunday. In total, the Mavericks won nine of the 10 matches against the Beavers, including three via fall and two via tech fall, to go along with three decisions and a forfeit.

Junior Chase Beckett (133 lbs.) recorded his fifth fall of the season as he bested Dylan McDonald at the 1:20 mark of their match, before junior Walker Bents (149 lbs.) scored a pin over Robert Salehi at 1:24 for his third win via fall of the season. Senior Caleb Meunier (157 lbs.) notched his 12th victory of the season via fall. He defeated Roman Leifridt at the 4:10 mark of their match.

Sophomore Jacob Fitzpatrick (125 lbs.) scored a 17-1 tech fall over Austin Garcia at 4:55 as he recorded three takedowns and a pair of four-point nearfalls. Sophomore Paolo Salminen (165 lbs.) notched his first tech fall victory of the season via eight takedowns as he bested John Armstrong 24-8 at 6:45.

SCOUTING THE JIMMIES
New to the conference, the Mavericks will face University of Jamestown in wrestling for the first time on Saturday at Harold Newman Arena.

The Jimmies are 1-4 overall, 0-4 in NSIC duals and fell 45-9 to No. 13 Augustana on Saturday in Sioux Falls. Despite the loss, the team picked up a pair of victories. Elijah Nose won by pinfall at 2:22 at 133 pounds and Kellan Larson earned an 8-6 decision at 141 pounds.

Gresh Jones is in his second season as men's wrestling coach. He guided the Jimmies to a seventh-place finish at the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference championships last season, with four wrestlers inside the top four at the KCAC Championships.

Jones presides over a young group. With 18 true freshman on the team, Jamestown was selected to finish 11th in their first season at the Division II level. Isaac Ronquillo was named a wrestler to watch by the NSIC. The Bakersfield, California freshman wrestles at 125 pounds and was a three-time state qualifier in high school.

SCOUTING THE MARAUDERS
UMary is undefeated at home (2-0) and 8-2 overall heading into the weekend. The Marauders (4-0 NSIC) take on St. Cloud State on Thursday before welcoming the Mavericks Sunday afternoon to McDowell Activity Center. It will be the first time on the mat since January 15, after the team did not compete at the Worthington Open, due to poor weather.

UMary handled the Mustangs 43-6 in Marshall, winning eight matches, including three by fall, three by tech fall and one by major decision. Heavyweight Luke Tweeton is ranked No. 4.

The Marauders were picked to finish fourth in the NSIC in the preseason and are coached by Adam Aho (13th season). The Mavericks are 17-3 all-time against UMary. Last season, MSU edged the Marauders 21-19 in Bismarck.

In the final match of the night, Drake Hayward (174 lbs) won by 6-3 decision for the dual win. Hayward led early with a takedown in the first period. Neither wrestler scored in the second, followed by an escape by Hayward after choosing the down position. Mushinsky (UMary) found a takedown, which Hayward was able to quickly escape, and along with 1-pt of riding time.

Mushinsky is back at 174 pounds this season as a redshirt senior.
