Mankato, Minn. --- Minnesota State (2-8-0, 0-8-0 WCHA) fell to #4 Minnesota (7-2-0, 5-2-0 WCHA) by a final of 2-1 Saturday evening at the Mayo Clinic HSEC.
Both teams battled to collect the first tally resulting in a scoreless first period. The Gophers took the early advantage in the shot department 11-8 through the first 20 minutes of play.
It wasn't until the 6:40 mark of the first period that freshman
Lauren Zawoyski was able to pound home the game's first score.
The Edina, Minnesota native notched her first career goal off a rebound in the paint. On the play, sophomore
Lilie Ramirez and freshman
Kamryn Van Batavia notched assists on the play. Van Batavia's assist was her first apple in the purple and gold.
Minnesota came storming back under seven minutes later to tie the game at one. The Gophers would notch the go-ahead goal at the 13:36 mark of the final period.
Junior
Suzette Faucher stopped 30 of 32 shots dropping to a 1-5 record on the season. Her performance today improved her overall goals-against average to 3.35 and her save percentage to .889.
"We've made progress this weekend. We've made strides in developing while learning from the last three series," stated head coach
John Harrington. "Our freshmen have been able to step up in big moments like you saw this weekend and give us quality minutes."
The Mavericks are back in action on Thursday as they get set for the Hall of Fame game against St. Thomas in Maple Grove, Minnesota. The opening faceoff is set for 7 p.m.
