WARRENSBURG, Mo. --- The Minnesota State women’s golf team sits tied for fourth place after the opening day of the 2023 Midwest Intercollegiate hosted by Central Missouri at the Mules National Golf Club. The Mavericks, Nebraska Kearney and Winona State all shot a 310.
The Mules National Golf Club is a par-70 course that covers 5,682 yards. Central Missouri holds a two-shot lead over Augustana with a 13-over 293. Molly Stevens of Augustana was the only player to shoot under par for the day as she turned in a four-under 66 and sits with a five-shot lead. Minnesota State sits four shots out of third place.
Individually, senior Kelly Winter leads the way for the Mavericks as she shot a three-over par 73, recording a pair of birdies during the day and sits in sixth place. Sophomore Sammy Youngquist sits tied for seventh with a four-over 74. Youngquist’s round also included two birdies.
“We need to keep the ball in play off the tee,” said Director of Golf Alex Schmitz. “Tomorrow, we get the opportunity to play the way we have all fall, and we need to seize that chance.”
Senior Anna Cihak registered an 80 and is tied for 46th while sophomore Ava Olson shot an 83 and tied for 63rd. Individually, freshman Victoria Woytassek shot an 11-over 81 with two birdies, while freshman Claire Schweim shot an 86.
Winter, Youngquist, Cihak and Olson combined to shoot a 4.33 on the par fours, which was the second-best score on those holes today. Winter was one of seven players to play the par threes to even or better as she averaged a 3.00 on those holes. The event features 112 golfers who collectively averaged an 83.19 over the 18 holes.
The two-day long event concludes tomorrow.
