DAVENPORT, Fla. -- Minnesota State recorded its third consecutive victory when it charged past the University of the Sciences for a 21-0 victory, Tuesday in the RussMatt Central Florida Baseball Invitational.
With the win, its third in a row, MSU is now 5-2 on the season. USciences fell to 4-10 on the year with the loss.
In a game that was scheduled to be a nine-inning affair, the Mavericks made it seven when they forced the 10-run rule to be put in effect with a 21-0 lead in the seventh inning. MSU scored atleast one run in every frame besides the seventh and final inning of the contest, scoring one in the first, two in the second, five in the third, a pair in the fourth and 10 in the fifth before scoring one more time in the sixth inning to take a 21-0 lead.
Senior outfielder Cam Kline drove in the first and eventual game-winning run for MSU. His first-inning single scored Mikey Gottschalk and got the ball rolling, leading the Mavericks to 21 unanswered runs and their fifth win on the year.
Sophomore infielder Jackson Hauge had another massive day with the bat for the Mavericks. The Ramsey, Minn., native went 2-4 with four runs batted in as well as three scored in the game. His three-run home run to left in the fifth inning was his second blast of the season and put MSU up 17-0 in the game.
On the mound for the Mavericks, sophomore right-hander Nick Altermatt made his second start of the season and improved to 2-0 on the year after he pitched four complete innings of shutout baseball. Altermatt surrendered a pair of hits and walked one while striking out six Devils' batters. Also a two-way threat, Altermatt batted in Tuesday's contest and went 2-3 with a walk, had an RBI and scored three times.
On the way to the explosive victory, the Mavericks outhit the Devils 19-3. While was strong once again defensively, with no errors, USciences had three defensive miscues in the game.
Minnesota State continues play in the RussMatt Central Florida Baseball Invitational on Wednesday with a 3:00 p.m. CST contest against Notre Dame College at Northeast Regional Park #3.
