DAVENPORT, Fla. -- For the second day in a row, the Minnesota State baseball team scored 21 runs en route to a 21-3 victory over Notre Dame College and fourth consecutive win in the RussMatt Central Florida Baseball Invitational, Wednesday night.
With the win, its fourth in a row, MSU is now 6-2 on the season. NDC fell to 3-9 on the year with the loss.
Leading the way with the bats Wednesday were juniors Nick Altermatt and Ryan Wickman. Altermatt sported a 3-for-5 evening with seven RBI and three runs scored on a pair of home runs and a double. Wickman batted 2-for-4 in the game and had five RBI as well as two runs scored after he hit an eventual game-winning grand slam in the second inning and singled in the sixth.
After the Mavericks' Altermatt and Falcons' Nick Petrolla traded two-run home runs in the first inning, Wickman broke the 2-2 tie when he hit a grand slam to left in the second inning that ended up being the eventual game-winning hit after it gave MSU a 6-2 lead.
In the third inning, MSU piled on five more runs, which included another grand slam for MSU hit to left field by Altermatt, marking his second blast of the game and season, making it an 11-2 game.
After scoring one more run in the fourth and sixth innings, MSU put up a seven spot in the seventh inning before the Falcons scored once in the bottom half of the inning. Once the Mavericks added one final run to their total in the ninth inning, Derek Lilledahl came in for relief duty, surrendered a hit and struck out the side to wrap up the game with MSU coming out on top by a final score of 21-3.
On the mound for the Mavericks, senior right-handed starting pitcher Cam Kline improved to a 1-1 record on the campaign after pitching six complete innings and allowing two runs on four hits while striking out 10 Falcons' batters along the way. Making relief appearances for MSU, Spencer Wright, Nathan Culley and Lilledahl combined for three innings pitched, one unearned run, a hit and walked two while striking out five.
On the way to the explosive victory, the Mavericks outhit the Falcons 20-5. MSU was the only side with errors defensively in the contest, it had a pair.
Minnesota State wraps up play at the RussMatt Central Florida Baseball Invitational on Thursday with a 12:30 p.m. CST contest against Seton Hill at Northeast Regional Park #3.
