Minnesota State Edges Its Way Past Seton Hill for Fifth Straight Win to Conclude Trip to Florida

DAVENPORT, Fla. -- Minnesota State wrapped up its eight-day trip to Florida with a 5-4 victory over Seton Hill, Thursday evening.

With the win, its fifth in a row, MSU is now 7-2 on the season. SHU fell to 6-4 on the year with the loss.

Leading the way offensively for MSU was junior Nick Altermatt, he went 1-4 in the contest with a two-run double that opened the scoring. Additionally, senior catcher Ben Livorsi batted 1-3 with a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh that ultimately lifted the Mavericks over the Griffins.

Altermatt opened the scoring for MSU with a two-run double in the bottom of the first inning that gave MSU an early 2-0 lead. After the Griffins scored twice to tie it in the next half inning, MSU reclaimed the lead thanks to another RBI double from sophomore infielder Jackson Hauge in the bottom half of the third for a 3-2 lead.

After the Mavericks and Griffins each traded a run during the fifth frame, making it a 4-3 ballgame, Livorsi provided an insurance run in the seventh for MSU on a solo blast to right field that made it 5-3.

The Griffins cut the deficit in half when Drew Garth answered back with a solo home run out to left in the eighth, which shrunk the Mavericks' lead to 5-4.

However, junior right-hander Collin Denk made his first relief appearance of the season in the sixth inning and finished the game out to record his second career save after he slammed the door on the Griffins in the ninth for a 5-4 win.

Making his second start of the season, senior right-handed pitcher Brendan Knoll, now 2-0 on the season after earning the win, threw five innings and allowed six hits for three runs (two earned). He struck out three Griffins' batters along the way. In his first relief appearance of the season, Denk picked up his second career save after locking up the win for MSU in the final four frames. He struck out six SHU hitters and allowed just a home run during the top of the eighth inning.

SHU owned a slight 7-6 advantage in hits during the contest. However, SHU also came down with more errors at a 3-1 clip, which resulted in a pair of unearned runs scoring for the Mavericks.

Minnesota State owned a 7-2 record to open the season at the RussMatt Central Florida Baseball Invitational. Riding a five-game win streak, the Mavericks open Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action with a three-game series hosting Minot State, March 19-20.
