DAVENPORT, Fla. -- The Minnesota State baseball team resumed action at the RussMatt Central Florida Baseball Invitational splitting a seven-inning doubleheader against Findlay, Friday.
Minnesota State, now 2-1 on the season, won the first game, 6-2, before falling to Findlay, now 2-10 this season, by a final score of 15-5 in the second game.
GAME ONE (7 INNINGS) | Minnesota State 6, Findlay 2
A big second inning that saw the Mavericks score five runs on seven hits opened the scoring and led to the victory. Senior Ben Livorsi opened the scoring with a two-RBI triple in the inning before Ryan Bachman, Ryan Wickman and Nick Altermatt had RBI knocks to make it a 5-0 game.
After the Oilers rallied to cut the deficit to four, 5-2, with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning, a throwing error in the fourth led to another MSU run scoring. MSU carried the 6-2 lead from that point on for its second consecutive victory.
The Mavericks outhit the Oilers 9-6 in game one. UF had a pair of defensive errors while MSU finished the game with one.
On the hill, Cam Kline, now 1-0 this season, earned the win. Kline pitched five frames of two-run baseball with five hits allowed. He stuck out nine Oilers' batters and walked three others. For Findlay, Anthony Kyle, the Oilers starting pitcher, was handed the loss and fell to 0-2 on the season.
GAME TWO (7 INNINGS) | Findlay 15, Minnesota State 5
UF opened the scoring in game two with a two-run first inning. Both runs scored thanks to a throwing error for MSU. The Oilers didn't look back from that point on and scored another pair of runs in the second, one in the third, six in the fourth, three in the fifth and another in the sixth to take a commanding 15-0 lead over the Mavericks.
In the seventh inning, the Mavericks mounted a five-run rally, but the comeback was halted there as MSU was defeated 15-5 by UF in game two.
UF outhit MSU 10-7 in the second game. Errors riddled MSU by a 6-0 margin. UF pounced on MSU for four unearned runs in the contest.
Earning the win for UF was Bailey McCord, who is now 1-0 this season, after he threw 5.2 innings of two-hit shutout baseball. McCord struck out six and walked a pair along the way. Sophomore southpaw Nathan Culley, now 0-1 on the season, made the game-two start on the hill for MSU. Culley pitched 3.1 innings while allowing three hits and five runs (one earned). Culley stuck out and walked two in the contest.
The Mavericks resume action in the RussMatt Central Florida Baseball Invitational Saturday at 8:30 a.m. CST when they take on Tiffin at Northeast Regional Park #3 in Davenport, Fla.
