DAVENPORT, Fla. -- Minnesota State dropped a 6-3 decision to Tiffin in its fourth game at the RussMatt Central Florida Baseball Invitational, Saturday morning.
Following its second-straight loss, MSU now owns a 2-2 record to start the season. TU improved to 5-10 this year with the victory.
Senior catcher Ben Livorsi opened the scoring with a solo blast to right field in the bottom of the second inning, which gave MSU the first lead, 1-0.
The Dragons then rattled off six unanswered runs between the third and seventh innings. The deal breaker was Thomas Auth's three-run home run, which capped a four-run surge in the third inning that gave the Dragons a 4-1 lead. In the sixth and seventh innings, RBI doubles from Cal Brazier and Griffin Stevens made it a 6-1 ballgame, respectively.
The Mavericks mounted a comeback twice near the end, scoring once in the seventh before adding another run in the ninth. However, the Dragons stranded the bases-loaded in the ninth inning to end the game in a 6-3 final, handing the Mavericks their second loss of the campaign.
TU outhit MSU 10-4 in the game. The Dragons had three errors in the contest while the Mavericks had one defensive miscue.
Earning the win for the Dragons was starting pitcher Michael Boswell, now 1-2 this season, after he threw six innings and allowed two hits and one run on Livorsi's home run. He struck out three and walked two. On the hill for the Mavericks, right-handed starting pitcher Collin Denk, now 0-1, made his 2022 debut on the hill for the purple and gold. Denk pitched six innings and allowed five runs on seven hits. He struck out four along the way.
Minnesota State resumes action at the RussMatt Central Florida Baseball Invitational when it takes on Northwood, Sunday at 5:00 p.m. CST.
