DAVENPORT, Fla. -- Minnesota State got back in the win column with a 5-1 victory over Northwood at the RussMatt Central Florida Baseball Invitational, Sunday night.
With the win, MSU is back over .500 with a 3-2 record. NU now stands 9-6 this season.
Leading the way on the hill for MSU was senior right-handed pitcher Brendan Knoll, who pitched a one-run complete game en route to the victory in his first start of the 2022 campaign. Knoll pitched all nine innings, allowed one run on four hits, walked two and struck out eight along the way. Offensively, junior outfielder Ryan Wickman broke through with his bat and had a 4-5 evening. Wickman recorded a pair of RBI, scored two runs and had a triple, which drove in the eventual game-winning run.
Sophomore infielder Adam Schneider opened the scoring in MSU's favor in the first inning. His sacrifice fly to center field was hit deep enough to bring in Wickman in the top of the first inning, which gave the Mavericks a 1-0 lead. In the bottom half, the Timberwolves scored their first and only run of the ballgame when Matt Magno singled through the right side to tie the game, 1-1.
In the fifth inning, MSU broke things open and took a 4-1 lead when Wickman hit his RBI triple to score Cam Kline, Mikey Gottschalk hit a sacrifice fly to center that scored Wickman and Nick Altermatt came in to score on an error by the Timberwolves' shortstop.
The eighth inning saw Wickman drive in the game's final run when he singled to right field, which brought Ross Indlecoffer around to make it a 5-1 game.
En route to the 5-1 victory, the Mavericks outhit the Timberwolves 13-4 in the game. Defensive miscues were a problem for NU as it had three errors in the contest, MSU was perfect in the field Sunday night as it had no errors.
Knoll earned the win as the only arm to throw for the purple and gold in the game. He now owns a 1-0 record to start the season. Benji Alderson was handed the loss in relief for the Timberwolves and now stands 0-1 on the season.
