DAVENPORT, Fla. -- While the Minnesota State baseball team was able to get one game in on Monday after defeating D'Youville 9-4, its second game with Concordia-St. Paul proved to be a work in progress as it was postponed due to inclement weather in the bottom of the first inning.
Minnesota State is now 4-2 on the season following its win in the first game. D'Youville also stands 4-2 after the loss. With the Mavericks up 3-0 in the bottom of the first inning, MSU and CSP will finish out the game at a later date that is to be determined.
GAME ONE (9 INNINGS) | Minnesota State 9, D'Youville 4
In the first game of the day for MSU, the Mavericks opened the scoring with three runs in the second inning. Hunter Ranweiler got it started when he singled to drive in Mikey Fredrickson and Ryan Bachman before Ryan Wickman scored on a throwing error by the DYU catcher. MSU led 3-0 after two innings in Florida.
The Mavericks took a 5-0 lead when Fredrickson hit a two-run home run to left field. Fredrickson's blast was the second of his career and first of the season and stood as the eventual game-winning hit.
After the Saints got in the score column with a two-run triple and two-run home run to close the gap to one run, the Mavericks walked in with two more runs to take a 7-4 lead after Bachman and Ross Indlecoffer were each hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Capping the game-one scoring was Jackson Hauge in the seventh inning. His two-RBI single to center drove in Ranweiler and Wickman and made it a 9-4 game, where it ultimately stood.
The Mavericks outhit the Saints 9-8 in the contest. DYU struggled defensively with two costly errors that led to MSU scoring an unearned run in the contest. MSU was perfect in the field and did not have an error.
On the hill, Jack Zigan, now 1-0 this season, earned the win. Zigan pitched 6.0 innings for the purple and gold, allowing four runs on six hits, while walking two and striking out six along the way. For D'Youville, Rob Stephens, the Saints starting pitcher, was handed the loss and fell to 1-1 on the season.
GAME TWO (POSTPONED - RAIN) | B1 - 2 Outs / Minnesota State 3, Concordia-St. Paul 0
Monday's second game for the Mavericks was off to a slow start from the getgo once rain hit Northeast Regional Park #3 to signal a rain delay one batter into the bottom of the first inning.
After the short delay, the Mavericks began to surge when Cam Kline drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 1-0 three batters before Hauge blooped a ball just over the second base bag between three CSP fielders. Moments before the next at bat, the skies opened up again and led to another delay with MSU up 3-0.
After a torential downpour at the ballpark and a delay that lasted over an hour, both sides settled on finishing the game at a later date. The game is postponed with the Mavericks leading 3-0 in the bottom of the first inning with runners in scoring position and Indlecoffer at the plate. The make-up date is to be determined.
The Mavericks resume action in the RussMatt Central Florida Baseball Invitational Tuesday at 12:15 p.m. CST when they take on the University of the Sciences at Lake Myrtle Park #4.
