Mavericks Shutout by Second-Ranked Buckeyes in WCHA Bout Friday Night

MANKATO, Minn. -- The Maverick women's hockey team was dealt a 5-0 shutout by the No. 2-rated Ohio State Buckeyes in Western Collegiate Hockey Association game played at Mayo Clinic Health System Event Center, Friday night.

MSU now stands 12-14-1 overall with an 8-14-1 record in the WCHA. OSU improved to 20-5-0 and 16-5-0 in the WCHA with the win.

Striking first, Paetyn Levis gave the Buckeyes a lead, with what was the eventual game-winning goal, at 5:43 of the first period when she batted in a loose puck off a rebound near the top of the Maverick crease. Despite trailing by one goal after 20 minutes of action, MSU was leading OSU in shots on goal, 12-8, while trailing OSU, 1-0, at the first intermission.

The Buckeyes turned things on in the middle period and scored another pair of goals to extend the lead to 3-0 through two periods. Again, it was Levis scoring her second goal of the game at 10:36 before Jenna Buglioni scored at 16:57 to make it a three-goal lead. OSU dominated shots in the second period by a 20-3 margin to grab a 28-15 lead after 40 minutes of play.

Gabby Rosenthal (4:29) and Buglioni (5:40) scored in the third period to write off the win for the Buckeyes by a final score of 5-0.

In between the pipes for the Buckeyes, Amanda Thiele, now 10-3 this season, made 23 saves to shutout the Mavericks en route to the victory. In goal for MSU, Calla Frank, now 10-12-1 on the season, stopped 39 of OSU's 44 shots in the contest.

OSU finished the contest with a 44-23 advantage in shots on goal. With three power-play chances, OSU had a pair of power-play goals as well as shorthanded goals in Friday's affair. MSU was unsuccessful on four cracks with the advantage.

The Mavericks and Buckeyes rematch Saturday with a 2:01 p.m. face-off scheduled back at Mayo Clinic Health System Event Center.
