Mavericks Swept by Second-Ranked Buckeyes Saturday

MANKATO, Minn. -- The Maverick women's hockey team fell 7-1 in suffering a sweep against No. 2-rated Ohio State Buckeyes following a Western Collegiate Hockey Association game played at Mayo Clinic Health System Event Center, Saturday afternoon.

MSU now stands 12-15-1 overall with an 8-15-1 record in the WCHA. OSU improved to 21-5-0 and 17-5-0 in the WCHA with the win.

The Buckeyes owned a 2-0 lead after one period of play. Lexi Templeman and Jenna Buglioni got the scoring started with markers at 16:07 and 19:33 of the first period, respectively. OSU dominated play from the getgo and owned a 15-7 advantage in shots on goal after period one.

OSU's Gabby Rosenthal scored the next goal at 4:13 of the second period to give the Buckeyes a 3-0 lead. Maverick senior defenseman Jessica Kondas scored MSU's only goal on the power play at 5:34 of the middle period to disrupt the surge momentarily. OSU carried a 3-1 lead into the second break as well as a 33-11 advantage in shots through two periods of play. 

The third period saw the Buckeyes run away with the game, scoring three more goals en route to a 7-1 victory in the series finale to secure a road sweep over the Mavericks. In the end, shots on goal sided with the Buckeyes by a 43-19 margin.

In between the pipes for the Buckeyes, Amanda Thiele, now 11-3 this season, made 18 saves on 19 shots for the victory. In goal for MSU, junior Calla Frank, now 10-13-1 on the season, stopped 40 of OSU's 47 shots.

Each side had one power-play goal in Saturday's affair. OSU went 1-2 on the power play while MSU was 1-4 with the advantage.

Up next, the Mavericks travel to Madison, Wis., to take on the #3 Wisconsin Badgers next Saturday and Sunday.
