Mavericks Defend NSIC Title With Victory in NSIC Indoor Championships

Mankato, Minn. --- The Minnesota State women's track & field team was victorious in the second day of the NSIC Indoor Championship as they successfully defended their title in Myers Field House Saturday afternoon. The Mavericks earned a conference record 243 points during the successful championship weekend.

In the Pentathlon, Minnesota States Samantha Sunnarborg and Zoe Stone finished fourth and fifth, respectively. Sunnarborg earned 3,321 points and Stone accrued 3,262 points. Sunnarborg took the top spot in the shot put with a toss of 37' 8'' (11.49m). Stone won the high jump with a height of 5' 2'' (1.58m).

Minnesota State saw Amanda Montplaisir take home a fifth-place finish in the Mile run with a time of 4:59.32 setting a NCAA provisional mark.

The Mavericks Denisha Cartwright set a new school record in the 60m hurdles on her way to a NSIC title with a time of 8.24 breaking her previous provisional mark of 8.49. Cartwright is now a back-to-back NSIC champion in this event and currently is first in the country. This is the fourth time the Mavericks have earned the NSIC title in school history.

Sherona Stewart finished second in the 400m dash breaking her previous NCAA provisional mark with a time of 56.31. With her performance, Cartwright earns All-NSIC honors. Rose Cramer and Rose Gaye finished fourth and fifth with times of 57.48 and 57.89, respectively.

The Mavericks took home the top three spots in the 60m dash with Makayla Jackson breaking her previously held school record as well as the NSIC record with a time of 7.32 in the event. Jackson has earned All-NSIC honors for this performance. This is the seventh time a Maverick has won the conference championship and second time for Jackson. With this victory Jackson is currently first in the nation. Denisha Cartwright finished second earning All-NSIC honors with a time of 7.36 breaking her previous provisional mark. Ja'Cey Simmons also garnered All-NSIC honors after finishing third tying her previous provisional mark of 7.59.

In the 200m dash Denisha Cartwright broke both the school and NSIC record after winning the NSIC title with a time of 24.22. This is the seventh time the Mavericks have won this event and Cartwright's second consecutive. Cartwright currently sits tied for third in the country. Makayla Jackson finished second in the event breaking her previous provisional mark of 24.60 with a time of 24.54. With this effort Jackson has earned All-NSIC honors. Rose Cramer rounded out the top three with a time of 24.67 and earning All-NSIC honors. Cramer currently is seventh in the nation. Ja'Cey Simmons and Sherona Stewart finished fourth and fifth with provisional marks of 24.75 and 25.01, respectively.

Brea Perron and Katie Taylor finished first and second in the shot put. Perron won the event with a throw distance of 48' 11.75'' (14.93m) breaking her previous provisional mark of 47' 9'' (14.55m) and currently is 10th in the country. Perron has earned Minnesota States sixth conference title with the victory today. Perron has earned All-NSIC honors for her performance as well. Taylor finished second earning All-NSIC accolades with a distance of 47' 1'' (14.35m). Taylor is currently ninth in the nation.

Flore Gracia earned All-NSIC honors after her second-place finish in the triple jump with a distance of 40' (12.19m). Gracia is currently 14th in the country. Stella Neophytou finished fourth setting a NCAA provisional mark of 39' 5.75'' (12.03m).

Amanda Montplaisir took home the fourth spot in the 3000m run with a provisional mark of 9:55.52.

In the final event of the day, the Minnesota State 4x400 team that consisted of Rose Gaye, Rose Cramer, Emma Borowicz and Sherona Stewart finished third in the event with a time of 3:55.01

The Mavericks that qualified for nationals will head to Pittsburg, Kan., for the NCAA Indoor Championships that will be held all day on Friday Mar. 11 – Saturday Mar. 12.
