Mavericks to Close Out Regular Season Schedule Against #15 Peacocks and Warriors

MANKATO, Minn. --- The Minnesota State men's basketball team wraps up its regular season schedule this week as it travels to #15 Upper Iowa on Thursday for a 7:30 p.m., game, before hosting Winona State on Saturday at 3:30 p.m., at Taylor Center.

Minnesota State History: The 2021-22 season marks the 100th campaign as a varsity sport for Minnesota State men's basketball. The Mavericks are 1,396-931 (.599) in 2,327 games since the program's inception in the 1920-21 season. MSU capped its 33rd and final season as a member of the NCC in 2008 and owned a 283-267 (.515) record in 550 league games played. In the NSIC, MSU owns a 198-92 (.682) record to go with four regular-season championships and two tournament championships.

Against the Peacocks: Thursday's game between Minnesota State and Upper Iowa marks their 33rd meeting with MSU leading the all-time series 23-9. Earlier this season, the Mavericks defeated the Peacocks 98-96 in overtime at Taylor Center.

Sophomore Quincy Anderson netted a career-high 35 points against the Peacocks, to go along with 10 rebounds for a double-double. Junior Devonte Thedford matched his career-high with 24 points, while freshman Brady Williams tallied 12 points and eight rebounds.

Joe Smoldt led the Peacocks with 28 points, while Jake Hilmer tallied 22 points as he went 12-of-12 from the free throw line. Jareese Williams tallied 21 points as well.

Head Coach Matt Margenthaler owns a 23-9 record against the Peacocks, including an 11-4 record on the road.

Against the Warriors: Saturday's game between Minnesota State and Winona State marks their 144th meeting, with MSU leading the all-time series 89-53. The Warriors won their previous meeting 73-59 earlier this season.

Sophomore Quincy Anderson led the Mavericks with 20 points and six rebounds, while freshman Brady Williams tallied 12 points. Sophomore Malik Willingham recorded 10 points as well.

Devin Whitelow led the Warriors with 18 points and six assists, while Connor Drew posted 17 points. Luke Martens tallied a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds as well.

Head Coach Matt Margenthaler owns a 17-24 record against the Warriors, including an 8-11 record at Taylor Center.

Concerning the Mavericks: Minnesota State enters the week the owner of a 15-8 record, including an 8-8 NSIC record. This past weekend, MSU defeated Wayne State 81-76 before falling to Augustana 85-74 at Taylor Center.

As a team, MSU is averaging 78.3 points and 37.2 rebounds per game while shooting 47.9% from the field. The Mavericks are also shooting 34.3% from three-point range and have passed out 254 assists and blocked 115 shots.

Sophomore Quincy Anderson is leading the Mavericks with 17.3 points and 6.6 rebounds per game this season. Junior Devonte Thedford has tallied 11.1 points per game and is shooting 48.4% from the field. Freshman Brady Williams is averaging 12.4 points a game, while sophomore Malik Willingham has posted 10.2 points per game also.

The Mavericks are led by Matt Margenthaler, who is in his 21st season at Minnesota State. He owns a career record of 435-195 (.690).

Concerning the Peacocks: #15 Upper Iowa enters the week the owner of a 22-4 record, including a 16-4 NSIC record. Last weekend, UIU bested both Southwest Minnesota State (67-56) and Sioux Falls (82-58) at home.

As a unit, UIU is averaging 83.6 points and 35.7 rebounds per game this season, while shooting 47.9% from the field and 37.4% from three point range. The Peacocks have passed out 324 assists and have posted 157 steals.

Joe Smoldt has tallied 17.6 points and 4.0 rebounds per game this season, while Jake Hilmer has tallied 16.6 points and 3.9 assists per game. Lucas Duax has posted 10.0 points and 4.0 rebounds per game also.

Upper Iowa is coached by Brooks McKowen who is in his ninth season with the Peacocks. He owns a career record of 146-114.

Concerning the Warriors: Winona State enters the week the owner of a 14-9 record, including a 10-8 NSIC record. The Warriors defeated Sioux Falls 76-75, before falling to Southwest Minnesota State 79-71 last weekend.

As a unit, WSU is averaging 72.7 points and 30.3 rebounds per game this season, while shooting 46.1% from the field and 35.8% from three point range. The Warriors have passed out 281 assists and have tallied 130 steals.

Alex Rosner is leading the Warriors with 18.1 points per game this season, while Luke Martens has tallied 10.6 points and 7.4 rebounds per game. Devin Whitelow has tallied 10.1 points and 4.3 assists per game as well.

Winona State is coached by Todd Eisner who is in his seventh as head coach of the Warriors and 24th season overall. He owns a 92-77 record at WSU and a 515-249 career record.

NSIC Tournament: The first round of the NSIC/Sanford Health Tournament is scheduled for Wednesday, February 23. Should the Mavericks advance to the tournament, their opponent, along with the location and game time, are to be determined.
