Mankato, Minn. – Minnesota State's Drake Hayward, a sophomore at 157, led the Mavericks at the Yellowjacket Open hosted by Rochester Community and Technical College in Rochester, Minn., Saturday.
 
Hayward went 5-0 at the tournament, defeating Cooper Larson (Wisconsin-La Crosse) in the championship match 8-3.
 
Another Maverick who placed at the open tournament was Caleb Meunier, who went 4-1 in placing second at 149.
 
Minnesota State also had two wrestlers at the Pointer Open in Stevens Point, Wis., Saturday. Michael Smith placed fifth at 174, placng 4-2 at the tournament. Max Villnow placed fourth at 285 going 5-2 to start the season.
 
All wrestlers were unattached at both tournaments..
 
The Mavericks take the mat again Nov. 12 at the Luther Open in Decorah, Iowa.
