MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- The Minnesota State Maverick women's hockey team was upended 3-0 by #5/6 rated Minnesota thanks to a trio of power-play goals for the Golden Gophers in a Western Collegiate Hockey Association tilt played at Ridder Arena, Friday evening.
After the WCHA matchup, the Mavericks now stand 5-2 overall with a 1-2 mark in WCHA action. The Gophers now own a 2-3 record overall and in WCHA contests this season.
The Gophers cracked the column first in Friday's contest with their first power-play goal when Madeline Wethington scored off a rebound at 12:14 of the first period. The Gophers carried the 1-0 lead into the first intermission.
The Gophers scored their second goal on the power play at 11:55 of the second period off the stick of Gracie Ostertag to up their lead to 2-0.
In the third period, Taylor Heise scored the Gophers' third power-play goal of the evening to up Minnesota's lead to 3-0 half a minute into the final period. That's where the game ultimately stood as Minnesota used three power-play goals to defeat Minnesota State 3-0.
Despite taking the loss in goal for the Mavericks, junior goaltender Calla Frank, now 4-2 this season, stood tall by stopping 44 of the 47 shots she faced.
The Gophers outshot the Mavericks 47-14. With the man advantage, Minnesota was 3-for-4 with its power-play opportunities while Minnesota State was unsuccessful in two chances.
The Mavericks and Gophers rematch Saturday at 4:01 p.m. back in Mankato at Mayo Clinic Health System Event Center for the finale of this weekend's home-and-home series.
